About Scuttlebutt Taproom & Brewery

Founded by Phil and Cynthia “Scuttle” Bannan in 1996, the idea started as a homebrewing kit for Father’s Day 1990. As thoughtful as the gift was, it was also a source of strife – Scuttle wanted to use the kitchen for preparing meals for the family while Phil was crowding her out in favor of homemade beer. To maintain marital bliss we decided to move out of the kitchen and into a larger operation. A business plan was established in 1995 and we grew our operation from 5 gallon buckets to a 20 barrel system.

We brewed our first beer on July 4, 1996 with a 20 barrel system in the brew house, two 20 barrel fermenters and one 20 barrel bright tank. We brewed three styles of beer and finished out that first year with 170 barrels sold. Since then our capacity has grown and we have broadened our product line to include more than 20 styles of hand-crafted ales and lagers.

After more than 20 years Scuttlebutt Brewing Company remains family owned and independent.

QUIZ RECAP

It was great being back at Scuttlebutt Taproom and see how trivia has built up since my quizmaster days when it first opened! Mike has done a fantastic job building excitement and fun, and adding a few personal touches.

We had 8 teams on this night and right off the bat the action was fast and furious! I should say 7 teams on the night, because Jetty Island Jackelopes jumped out of the starting gates on a power mission and didn't look back. They doubled down in the first 3 rounds and held a 16 point lead before the other teams knew what hit them! They continued pouring it in with another perfect non-doubled round and ran away with first place by 25 points!

So, truly, everyone else was fighting for 2nd place. We had a strong battle for 2nd between Bar Tops and PDRE, both teams within a point of each other from round 4 through the finish, with My Couch Pulls Out and I'd Hit That just a handful of points behind. Strangely, My Couch and I'd Hit That were tied after every round, scoring the exact same numbers of points each time. Never seen that happen before! But they ended up tied for 4th place, not quite catching up with Bar Tops and PDRE. Now, those two teams locked up after round 7 in a dead heat, so we went to a tiebreaker guessing the number of carats in the Hope Diamond, where Bar Tops sparkled with their answer, only off by 8 carats, and nailing down 2nd prize.

I hope everyone had fun! And if I end up covering for Mike again, I will bring duce and a working cell camera (but probably no chicken and ribs!).
