WE'RE GROWING!!!! Tonight we had three teams squaring off in the colliseum of confusion we call trivia! We welcomed back long time trivia champs that have been playing trivia from here to Husick's Taphouse and beyond, Cobra Kai. We also saw two new teams. Say hello and welcome to Desi Gorls and 2 KIDS. Unfortunately, 2 KIDS had to bow out early which lead to a head to head race for first won by Cobra Kai! Great job teams! Enjoy your prizes, and I will see you next week
************************Fun Fact of the Day*************************
I was struggling to find a fun fact of the day this week that was related to the questions. One of the bonus questions pertained to a band in Antarctica which sparked a memory. Did you know that we have an Antarctic field researcher living a stones throw away? That's right! UC Davis' own Dr. Todgham does field research in the antarctic studying how animals have evolved to have a physiology that would enable them to survive such extreme temperatures. So bear with me, because there is some cellular talk.
Okay so every cell has a lipid bilayer that is essentially comprised of millions of little things called "phospholipids". These little guys have a phosphate head attached to a long kinky chain of fatty acids which you can draw a straight line through the middle of if that makes sense (They just zig-zag back and forth). Well anyways if animals had this, all of these little phospholipids are too close together for cold temperatures and the cells would freeze and burst!!! So how do the cold critters do it?? Turns out they "Saturate" their fatty acid chains which ultimately causes more space between all of the phospholipids which prevents the phospholipid bilayer of the cell from freezing!!!
