As trivia here at New Glory takes off, it's time to discuss other great launches. This week I'll focus on Chuck Yeager. Yeager made a name for himself in WW2 shooting down 13 enemy planes. He was shot down himself but evaded capture. After the war, Bell Aircraft company was looking for experienced volunteer pilots for an important test flight. 

The test was the flight of the X-1. The X-1 was designed to do what was thought to be impossible: break the sound barrier. In 1947, a bomber dropped Chuck in the X-1 out of the bay doors above Dry Lakes in southern California. The aircraft moved at over 662 mph at the altitude of 25,000 feet and indeed did the impossible and broke the sound barrier. Yeager passed away this last December at the ripe old age of 97.
