KTPQ reigned last night at Dunn Brothers Coffee in Plano as five teams fairly took over the joint for their usual Thursday night Trivia romp! The Rockerfellers ruled after a return from a rollicking revue of the Carribean with a first place win. A nice way to be welcomed back for sure. Always Late swept second place serenely while Pickles on a Plate picked up third with aplomb. The Bowtie Alpacas arrived late, which threw them off a bit, relegating them to fourth position. A warm welcome to newbies The Bochrim (The Boys in Hebrew), who wound up last in scoring but first in fun. We hope to see them back!
A most interesting question set was provided, as always, by our benevolent benefactors of blue book balderdash. The Picture Round required identifying the Las Vegas Hotels depicted. The gallows humored wag who couldn't remember the name of Mandalay Bay wrote down "that one a guy shot a bunch of people from"! Style points were archly awarded... A question on the Theme Round asked for the name of the gland that regulates growth. Naturally, Quiz Master Lou advised the audience that 50's sci-fi films such as The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Amazing Colossal Man, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Tarantula, et al, would have supplied the answer. QM Lou had to take umbrage to the Round Five question which asked for the alternate name of Sasquatch by classifying the creature as "fictional"! There is actually a body of evidence compiled by serious researchers and supported by none other than radio talk show host Michael Medved that the critter is real! "Fictional Monster" indeed! Hrumph! But, I digress... Couch potatoes got a leg up on the Handout Round when asked to match Hosts to their Game Show and boardgame enthusiasts scored points with a Scrabble question on Round Seven. Kudos to the quiz writers!
Until next week, this is QM Lou saying, "May the good quiz be yours!"

Despite the near freezing weather there was a decent turnout at Dunn Brothers Coffee last night. When your specialty is hot beverages, that does tend to encourage attendance! Quiz Master Lou himself imbibed a couple of javas to keep his anti-freeze topped off! Just think of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks but with a trivia contest; And no, that wasn't a question...
The Bumble Bees bumbled a couple of Double-or-Nothing gambles in a bid to play catch up after a burst of energy at the opening gate from the other three teams. The Bowtie Alpacas, JFFC and the Rockerfellers all succeeded in the first round at doubling their scores which no doubt led to the bumble, thus putting the poor bees into fourth position.
JFFC, augmenting their numbers with a pair of parents, won first place quite handily. Rockerfellers snagged second and the Alpacas captured third while entertaining QM Lou with illustrations on their answer sheets all night! (The answer is YES - Society is devolving back to pictograph writing!)
The quiz itself was a nice diversification of minutia, with the round six Hand-Out Round being QM Lou's fave. Matching the alien to their home planet was more daunting than one might imagine. Who belongs to Remulak and whom to Melmac? What about the planet Jakku? (Hint: Only George Lucas could come up with such a stupid name...) And what in the heck was the name of the planet where The Great Gazoo hails from?!? That's the kind of round that was...
Until next week my friends, stay warm, and remember...
Winter's here with all her bite.
Barring World's End or fire fight,
I'll see you next Thursday night.
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Sings Yoda Nights in Satin White?
I'm drifting... (Plays the Moody Blues.)

Thursday night at the Dunn Brothers Coffee Shop and once again the brains battle for trivia supremacy in yet another installment of King Trivia Pub Quiz!
Team Always Late has been showing up early newly and may have to change their moniker to Always on Time. On the other hand, this quiz master ponders that anytime one puts the word "always" into a name, one sets a goal that will invariably fail. That being said, Always Late performed admirably right up until the end when they Double-or-Nothing'd on the last round and got a couple of answers wrong. Too bad.
Bowtie Alpacas picked up on their weakness (funny, we had a cool round about Weaknesses and Self Destructiveness...), zoomed in for the kill and ended up squeezing into third place! Pickles on a Plate stalwartly maintained moved into and maintained second position while the JFFC bolted right out of the gate into first place and ran with it all the way to the end! (It was like watching a bi-plane win a hot air balloon race!)
Our question sets this week were a curious combination of Reality TV programming, Psychology and Movies. Find-the-Connection answers all led to 1997's TITANIC (Hah! Imagine, knowing Celine Deon's discography! Phah!) And do you know the Kubler-Ross Model? Huh? Do ya? Well, I did... But only because I saw 1979's ALL THAT JAZZ. (Heh, heh. Do the research, my trivia junkies...)
That's all the jazz Quiz Master Lou will comment on this week, friends. Stay calm and keep quizzing!
