Whoa, Nellie! Big teams playing here! Big teams! The crowd at Killarney's was big and
boisterous with several of the KTPQ groups sitting at the large, King Arthur style round
tables or occupying multiple tables to accommodate their numbers. Whether it's the
Indian Summer weather or the onset of Spring Break season or defiance of the plague, the
KTPQ crowd turned out!
Welcome to newbies YA Basic and Can You Dig It?, who joined our ranks of regulars. One
Left in the Chamber was number one with a bullet as they successfully ran the course,
breaking out of the pack and gaining momentum like a dark horse, galloping past all
competitors after a successful Double-or-Nothing in Round Five, earning them the number
one spot amongst winners! Big drama occurred with a three way tie for the second and
third place prizes! The aforementioned newbies, Can You Dig It?, dug up some silver
(apropos of our Theme Round involving mining) by winning the tie breaker, getting
closest to guessing the length of the Nile River. Seal Team 3 took third with the
second best guess while Tequila Mockingbird just ended up in Da Nile.
A very clever Find-the-Connection Round was concocted by our quiz writer overlords out
west by coming up with a name chain motif. The last word of the previous answer is the
first word of the next answer! Some successful DoN's on that one changed the complexion
of the game while the couch potatoes gained in the Hand Out Round, knowing what actor
was in what TV Show, just as the NFL geeks managed to score touchdowns in the seventh
round's First Draft Pick query.
Finally, Quiz Master Lou must print a retraction. While it's true that there will not
be a Pub Quiz next Tuesday due to the Saint Patrick's Day live band festivities, the
musical stylings of Sinead O'Connor and the Boomtown Rats will not, I repeat, will not
be the headlining acts. I also fibbed when I said the cast reunion of Father Ted would
be the opening act with an improv show. Sorry. Sorry. Just kidding.

Quite the quiz was had at Killarney's last night with five teams competing. A big Texas
style "welcome back" to One Left in the Chamber, who hasn't graced the grand hall of
Killarney's in some time. Whenever they play, the competition always amps up a notch!
The contest itself was the star with Deadly Alliance (aka Blood, Bath & Beyond) capturing
the lead out of the gate, falling back in Rounds four and five, then getting it back in
the last two rounds for a total victory! It was the Hand-Out Round's soccer centric
theme that won the day for them with a savage Double-or-Nothing that cinched the saddle
to that horse. Tequila Mockingbird also spring boarded by doubling in that round as well,
putting them into second place, a smooth come-from-behind victory after a faltering in
Round One from a bad DoN. Pickles on a Plate started off the evening well, graduating
from second, to first, then getting sidled into third, also due to the soccer round.
Wow. The quiz was like watching a FIFA World Cup match! Sorta... Incognito remained
mostly anonymous in fifth place but enjoyed playing nonetheless.
The World of EPCOT Picture Round managed to perplex most of the people most of the time.
Funny how they made Germany look a lot like Italy. On the other hand, that's happened
before... A lot of fun was had with a question from the Theme Round asking to identify
an obscure DC Comics super hero duo with the chief clue being that their name was
alliterative and weather related. The brainy types who weren't comic collectors were
able to come up with some variation of Tornado Twins that passed muster, but style points
went out to the team that put down Thunder Truckers! Which caused Quiz Master Lou
to ponder the existence of a 70's exploitation movie with the same title full of R-Rated
sex and violence... These things have been known to happen, after all.
That's all I got. Love in the Time of Coronavirus. Stay clean and healthy!

DATELINE: Fat Tuesday, 2020! Revelers at Killarney's enjoyed a fun filled Mardi Gras
themed question set as we embarked on another year's celebratory King Trivia Pub Quiz!
Resident champs, Tequila Mockingbird, pulled off an embarrassingly, point rich first
place victory with a successful Round One Double-or-Nothing putting them nearly twenty
points ahead of everybody else! Resident wait staff, the Bar Flies, managed a second
place win, forfeiting their prize cards to third place winners, Incognito, who in turn,
gave up their prize cards to fourth place team Wossa Matta-U, who, although outside of
the winner's circle in points, found themselves inside a circle of prizes. Nice, eh?
Unfortunately, Deadly Alliance (aka Blood, Bath & Beyond) did not fly first class this
time as per their usual style, although Steve did tell Quiz Master Lou a pretty funny
Albert Einstein joke too risque to print in this column. (You'll just have to ask me
later!) Our corporate quiz writers provided some pretty good Mardi Gras time-of-year
themed questions to fit the mood, including a delve into the Krewe Culture of parade
float creation for our Round Six Hand Out round. Even Steve, our bartender from New
Orleans didn't know all the inside baseball on that one!
In the tradition, everyone feasts and fancies like mad before buckling up, belting
down and going cold turkey for some self improving self denial. This can be spiritual
as well as physical. These days, we could all use more spiritual self improvement by
QM Lou's reckoning. And if you get the piece of King Cake with the baby in it, you are
one lucky dog, provided of course you didn't bite into the plastic infant damaging your
teeth or choking on the tiny tyke.
That's all I got. Have a great week everybody!
