About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

QUIZ RECAP

It was a nice summer night- though I'm sure everyone there was happy that Walnut Creek hadn't yet gotten into the triple digits that were promised for Wednesday and Thursday!

We had a nice mix of returning teams with some newcomers. I guess we had a lot of superhero fans as the "identify the superhero from the baby costume" picture round saw no less than four teams successfully go double or nothing! From there it was a tooth and nail scrap for the lead, alternating variously between Question Authority, Preciate Cha, Unstable Unicorns, and J-Roc, with VC Victory staying just one point shy of first.

But as they say in Highlander, "There can be only one!" And that one was settled with a tiebreaker, with Question Authority bringing home the gold.

For the drinking round, I reminded everyone of the very sad news that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had broken up, but said there was a silver lining: that meant they were both single! So I asked for everyone to give their best pickup lines to try to seduce Miley and/or Liam. There were a lot of fun lines, but these were the winners:

  • Hey Liam, what's your sweater made of? Cuz I think it looks like boyfriend material to me.
  • I may not be Thor, but do you want my lightning rod?
  • Hey Liam, either you're happy to see me or you're thinking about your brother again.
  • Is your daddy a thief? Because he must have stole all the stars out of the sky...and didn't put them in your singing career. I guess he put them in your eyes...

And here's the final one, whose author was blushing furiously when she came up to get her prize:

  • Liam, I may not come in like a wrecking ball, but I'll wreck your balls tonight.
