How the magnificent seven became the magnificent eight is Up the River without a Paddle...
That's the name of the newbie team that joined the ranks of the usual suspects last night at
Kilarney's. A big welcome back to Not Suitable For Work who dominated with numbers (I
counted eighteen people sitting at their table!) if not with scores, though they gave a
good run for their money. Seal Team 3, IFFY! and the Poonswagglers all kept the other
teams on their toes right through to the end, but it was Pickles on a Plate, Wossamatta-U
(who made an astounding bound into second place with a 6th round double-or-nothing!) and
Tequila Mockingbird who placed three, two and one respectively.

So, the magnificent 7 to 8 thing was how seven teams became eight, just to clarify. But
it played well from stage, anyway... Big kudos to our quiz writing staff who came up with
some pretty groovy (and suitably tough) question sets. Some queries were a little bit
country while others were just a little bit rock-n-roll. Enough to keep the smart and the
bold that smidgen of 'off-balance' to doubt the outcome. Like Magneto's helmet for example...
We got Flash Gordon and Loki. (Although Quiz Master Lou thought Maleficent's horns would
be more Loki's style.) And woe to the team that guessed Boba/Jango Fett's head bucket
belonged to Lando Calrissian. I mean, really?!? But the best answer was, in this Quiz
Master's opinion, question six from our theme round. Thoroughly Modern Millie making the
'Thor' connection was inspired! And two of our teams got it! Nice going all!

This week, I'd like to leave you all with one small opine on vandalism. The statue of the
Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park in London (which commemorates the RAF in WWII) was
splattered with paint last weekend. Such protestations are unjust, unreasonable and un-
civilized. It spells out barbarians at the gates. Never have so unenlightened, tried to
diminish the effort of so few, whom are owed so much by so many. With apologies to Mr.
Churchill.
