About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

Another packed house at Hops & Scotch kicked off the last trivia game of 2019. Round one started off rough for most...none of the teams got all six questions right, and sadly Question Authority missed one of them on an opening gambit of a double or nothing. It looked early on like Preciate Cha was headed for the win, but strong showings from house team L'il Cuties and newcomers Dub Squad threw down the gauntlet. We even had a bit of drama last night, with some vigorous debate from teams on both sides of the argument over whether the "toy line" from Find the Connection was G.I. Joe or Hasbro. Wanting to be fair to all involved, I researched the point during the break, and ruled that G.I. Joe was the acceptable answer, as written in the answers.

Finally, showing off their musical prowess, Dub Squad nailed a double or nothing in round 6 to fly into the lead. Both Shmear and L'il Cuties also got all the answers right in that round, but neither team decided to risk it and check that little box in the upper right corner of their handouts, so...

As it was almost New Year's Eve, for the drinking round I asked everyone what their New Year's Resolutions were. There were a bunch of great answers, but I had to choose five, so these were the ones I went with:

  • I resolve to never question rule #3, and Remember to tip the servers!
  • (a two-fer from the same table) Stop being a dick / Stop being a dick & eat more ass
  • To not get a job- all 2020
  • Send my 34 fifth graders to middle school not being complete shits.
  • To find the elusive G-spot!

It was a raucous night at Hops and Scotch! The place was packed, and everyone was of good cheer as we got down to holiday-themed trivia. As might be expected, regulars Preciate Cha and Question Authority took an early lead, but new team The Smartinis leapt into first in round 2 with a double or nothing. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't maintain that momentum. Bah Humbug showed up late and missed the first round, but jumped in strong, remaining so throughout. The Filthy Animals also had a very strong showing...if they had only dared a double or nothing on a round or two, they could have finished at the top. But it was seasoned veterans Question Authority and Preciate Cha that took first and second place.

Sticking with the holiday theme, for the drinking round I reminded everyone of that song, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," and asked: you've just seen your mother kissing Santa Claus. What happens next?

We had more winners than usual because I decided to make it a White Elephant! Winners had their choice of either one of the several presents provided by myself and Question Authority, or a gift card...or, as it was a White Elephant, they could steal someone else's present! And here are the winners :

What did you do when you saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus?

  • So I went to yell "slut" but then I stopped myself. This is 2019 and a lady can do with their body what they want. #feminism
  • And next Christmas had a little brother.
  • Give mom a high five. She's been single a long time.
  • Nothing! I hate my dad!
  • Eat Santa's cookies and watch from the closet
  • Play the 70's porn music. Bahm chika bow wow
  • Promptly went and bought her cold sore medicine.
  • I would ask my mom how long she has been straight.
  • Take a selfie.
  • Ride the zucchini!
  • Grab my Game of Thrones bell and yell, "Shame!"
  • Take a picture and blackmail Mr. Claus
  • Join in.

Everyone had a lot of fun, and a few gifts definitely got stolen...notably the Settlers of Catan board game and the Seinfeld Festivus sweatshirt, each of which got stolen the maximum number of times.

And to all a good night!

Visiting from out of town, the solitary member of Jessica's Team made quite the impression. Fresh out of the gate, he was in the lead, cementing that lead with a double or nothing in round 3 to put him ten points over closest competitor Question Authority. "Guess Where" was a tough round for everyone other than Jessica's Team, further solidifying his lead. Meat Palace made a big play in round 6, hitting a double or nothing to propel them into second place. Jessica's Team also got a double or nothing that round, becoming virtually untouchable in a runaway win.

For the drinking round, I asked what everyone was going to ask Santa for, with the Hops & Scotch staff choosing the winners. Here they are:

"Santa, what I'd like for the Holidays is..."

  • A Trivia Night win!
  • Student loan forgiveness.
  • Better looking friends.
  • My dignity.
  • My divorce to be final.
