The day after Christmas - The presents are open, the leftovers are in the fridge, and the family is still visiting. Eight teams sough a brief refuge from the time spent with visiting relatives. Well...at least that's what some of them told me. I'm sure some teams just wanted some amazing Longship Brewery Beer. And I'm sure a few wanted to just play trivia. And I'm fairly confident that a certain team wanted to show off their new team uniforms...

It was a well spirited battle with the following teams taking the top three spots:

1st: Indifferent Penguins
2nd: The Moops
3rd: Cyber Chemists

Though the answer of the night came from the returning team R.I.M. One of the many joys of being a Quiz Master, is to see the clever answers that teams jot down if they are unsure of the real answer. In this case, we had our round three "Tar Nation," where this week, each question or answer would include the word "Tar."

The question: What eight-legged microscopic animal is also called a "Water Bear?"

R.I.M's answer: Wa"tar" Bear.

For our Beer Round, we wanted to incorporate 2017, since it was the last show of the year. So we brought out the math experts and asked: How many straight cuts on a circular pizza, going through two points on the circumference, would you need to make in order to have 2017 pieces of pizza?

The answer, as explained by an actual engineer on Team Coco, was 36 cuts. The closest answer of 54.01, was offered up by the Unicorn Tippers, and they collected the beer.

It was a fun time with our trivia family during this festive time of year. We are actually off next week on 1/2/18, but we'll be back the week after. We wish everyone a prosperous New Year!

They say that Santa knows who is naughty and who is nice. Hopefully Santa didn't have any special helpers at Longship Brewery tonight, because there were a few naughty teams causing trouble and coal might be in order. This was our Christmas themed show, filled with cookies, holiday music, and a Christmas themed set of questions.

We could tell that it was going to be a long night, when we were asked an interesting question from newcomers Coratti Kicking. Now, Coratti is the last name of one of the players on this team, but when they handed us their round one answer sheet, they also asked, "Does spelling count?" Then we saw "Coratti" and I was concerned that they had spelled their own team name wrong. Luckily they cleared that up pretty fast to prevent additional ribbing. This team also jokingly answered "Die Hard" for any Christmas related question they weren't sure about, only to almost miss the one question that was actually about Die Hard. Yippie-Ki-Yay.

We also had a tight race for the victory, as the top five teams stayed within ten points of one another in the standings for a majority of the game. There was also something of a Longship record, where in round six, there were four teams that successfully hit the double or nothing to really make scoring interesting. Although Beerspiration and Hawaiian Time put forth a valiant effort, but missed out on the top three spots by one point and four points, respectively. Final standings:

1st: Cyber Chemists
2nd: Indifferent Penguins
3rd: R.I.M (First ever game and placed third, well done!)

Then we came to this week's beer round: Wrap Battle. We spooked a few teams when they thought we meant singing was involved, but then it dawned on some people that we meant "gift" wrapping. Each team was given a very oddly shaped children's toy that would be difficult and unique to wrap. They were all given a roll of paper, tape, and scissors, and the team to provide us with the most elegantly wrapped gift would claim the beer. We were very impressed, and you can see some examples in this week's photos, but it was Cyber Chemists to pulled it out this week. Although we joked that we picked this just to have other people wrap all of our gifts for us, all of the toys were donated to Longship's Toys For Tots collection.

We wish everyone a happy holiday, and invite you all to join us next week (the day after Christmas) for a relaxing post family gathering game. We'd love to hear about all of the gifts you receive.

Tonight at Longship Brewery, we saw the definition of a close game. At the end of round five, there were three teams tied for second place, and the first place team only had a single point lead. It really doesn't get much closer than that when it comes to trivia.

Newcomers, Beerspiration hit a successful double or nothing in round two, and held a lead for along time, until round four, when several teams got Sister Mary Clarence herself, Whoopi Goldberg on the ten point clue.

From there, Beerspiration along with Indifferent Penguins, Cyber Chemists, The Moops, and back from a hiatus Where's Brenda?, all traded leads and points through the latter half of the game.

We took a break for the Beer Round, where we took a turn to the world of sports for a change, and asked our teams to name the year in which Sonny Jurgensen tossed 32 TD passes, which was 1961. That a Philadelphia Eagles franchise record which had stood until this past Sunday, where Carson Wentz hit his 33rd on the year. Beerspiration was the closest with their guess of 1959.

Then we returned to Saintly sixth round, where Where's Brenda? identified 8 of the 10 Saints and what they are patrons of. This gave them the lead going into the final round, and they were able to hold on and claim the victory. The Moops came in second, with the Cyber Chemist, a team of one tonight, clenching third.

We hope to see you all come out next week and try your luck at King Trivia. Don't forget that the Christmas toy drive is going on at Longship up until Christmas Eve. So if you're going to stop by, consider bringing an unwrapped toy to make someone's Christmas a little brighter.
