About The Planing Mill

IN CRUST WE TRUST

Consider us your neighborhood pizza parlor with a gourmet twist. We visited some of the greatest pizzerias on the West Coast, took the best parts of each, and brought them to Visalia as best we could. Then we added our own Central Valley twist. The end result is our menu of  hearty, flavorful pizzas made with the freshest ingredients, locally sourced whenever possible. From the adventurous “Thai Pie” to the customer favorite “Kitchen Sink”, there’s truly something for all types of pizza lovers. We rounded out our menu with a variety of signature sandwiches, farm fresh salads, and delicious appetizers like our bruschetta and artichoke fritters.

Then there’s the beer. Twenty-one taps of fresh craft beer and cider plus a massive variety of cans and bottles.

At The Planing Mill, we are committed to providing great food and guest service in a comfortable, family friendly atmosphere. We are also dedicated to serving our community through our monthly “Pizza with a Purpose” non-profit fundraisers and other efforts.

Come see our spacious new location, complete with outdoor patio and lawn area. We think you’ll find The Planing Mill to be a pretty fun place to eat, drink and be merry with friends and family!

But don’t just take our word for it. In 2017, the Visalia Chamber of Commerce named us Small Business of the Year!

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

A lot of people see our name and spend the next few seconds trying to say it. Let us help. It’s pronounced “PLAIN-ing” Mill, though there’s certainly nothing “plain” about us!

So why the name? Our first location was part of the original Visalia Planing Mill. Founded in 1851, the mill crafted specialty wood products for generations of Visalians. In fact, many older homes and businesses in town have doors and cabinets that were hand-crafted right here on our property. In honor of this legacy, and as a reflection of our commitment to artisanship, the name fit perfectly.

A night of mass doubling led to the second highest score in Planing Mill History! Burt Reynolds's Ghost took an early lead with doubles in the first two rounds, and maintained that until the final round. Palpation Nation, however, started making their move with a successful answer of Bill Murray at the ten-point clue of Round 4, nine out of ten in Round 5, and a successful double in Round 6. It all came down to the final round, and yet another successful double in Round 7 got Palpation Nation the title. Burt Reynolds's Ghost had to settle for second just two points behind, with You're a Quizzard Harry in third. Walky Talky survived a missed double in Round 2 and surged into fourth place with successful doubles in the final two rounds.

It was a grudge match for the ages tonight at the Planing Mill, with a battle royale between You're a Quizzard Harry and Burt Reynolds's Ghost. Both successfully doubled in the first round, and BRG took a lead in Round 2, with Burt himself being one of the answers in the Bert-and-Ernie picture round! They maintained that lead through six rounds when an epic staredown occurred between the two teams, with neither knowing if the other would double in Round 6. Neither did, with YAQH getting all ten correct and BRG missing one.

So it was on to the final round. Ultimately, YAQH's cache of pens won the day, winning by a single point. In the battle for third, it was a game of extremes for Tequila Mockingbird, weathering a failed double in the opening round with successful doubles in Rounds 3 and 6 to take the bronze.

Mass doubling at the Planing Mill tonight! Three teams started off the night with a double in Round 1, and Burt Reynolds's Ghost took a lead with strong Rounds 2 and 3. Top Two Percenters started making their move, however, with an answer at the Ten Point clue in Round 4, a ten point score in Round 5, and a successful double in Round 6. Three's Company, meanwhile, overcame an unsuccessful double in Round 2 with a winning one in Round 6. In the end, Three's Company pulled into third place with a strong Round 7. Top Two Percenters made a bid for the win with a double on Round 7, but misfired, with enough points to finish second. Burt Reynolds's Ghost found themselves back in the winner's circle, cruising to a big win.
