QUIZ RECAP

What's shakin' at Shakertin's you might ask?  Just the usual Tuesday night trivia quiz, in which some were shaken but not stirred to answer some trival questions of the current news and pop culture scene.  (There were no James Bond questions alas, but I trust the above reference ignited at least one 007 synapse.) 

Welcome backs were extended to the Bowtie Alpacas and the Dog Whisperer, who found their way over from the defunct venues to reunite with Quiz Master Lou and KTPQ once again.  Here for the Beer scored a third place victory after a tense tie breaker by under estimating the population of Greece.  Now, talk about cosmic coinky dinks, Greece was not only one of the 11 "G" UN Member countries asked for in Round 7, but the real synchronicity occurred when select members of Deadly Alliance had just returned from a Mediterannen cruise and had just trodden Greecian soil!  They were chomping at the bit to answer that query, but had no need as they had won first place with an astonishing Double-or-Nothing 3X! Talk about stars aligning!  Our old school friends Wossa Matta-U returned from a gruelling semester and brought their weighty brains to win second place handily.  

The above mentioned Round 7 challenge brought on some desperate guesses when one cannot remember the names of those elusive realms whose existence resides under the letter "G".  For example:

In closing, I'd just like to thank Karen of Deadly Alliance for her kind words last night.  She reminded me that hosting a trivia quiz can be more than just reading the questions and keeping score.  She told me that since she and her husband retired, and because they had worked all their lives (keeping noses to the grindstone so to speak) that they never had the chance to go out and socialize.  She explained that since playing KTPQ in the last few years, they have forged friendships with some of the other team members that have genuinely enriched their lives.  So she thanked me for that occurrence...  Thank you, Karen.  You touched my heart!

QUIZ RECAP

Q: Where am I? 

A: In the Village. 

Q: What do you want?  

A: Pub Quiz. 

Q: Oh.  Well, that's all right, then!  

With apologies to The Prisoner.  But Shakertin's is located in The Village at I75 and Stacy Road in beautiful Allen, TX!  And that's where the action was last night as five teams converged to play our usual and favorite King Trivia Pub Quiz!  

The Bumble Bees thumped their fifty pound brains down on the table and won first prize with an eleven point lead.  Deadly Alliance captured second while One Left in the Chamber got third. 

Quiz Master Lou pondered aloud if Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame and Victor Hugo's had the same love interest while someone in team Here for the Beer misheard the question "cube shaped" as "pube shaped", which caused many a beverage to exit the nasal cavity.  There was also some concern for the soundness of judgement over at U.S. News and World Report as to whether or not they had been to New York City or San Francisco lately.  Oh well.  When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around.

QUIZ RECAP

"Oh what a wonderful feeeeeeling!  Oh what a beautiful daaaaay!  I'm
just a quiz master who's happeeeee!  'Cause I got my gig back okaaaay!"
The song is from Oklahoma but my heart's in Texas, along with the fine
establishment of Shakertin's in Allen, where the drinks are generous
and the management superb! 

It was quite a reunion with regular teams Pickles on a Plate, Deadly
Alliance, Here for the Beer and One Left in the Chamber all converging
for their favorite, weekly pastime.  Welcome to newbies Tom Cheats,
although they didn't (they sat in the booth right next to the DJ station
so I had my eye on 'em the whole time!). 

It was quite the horse race.  Pickles took the lead with a Double-or-
Nothing in round one while DA and Here/Beer maintained steady second
and third positions for the next few rounds.  (BTW, Here for the Beer
was formerly Seal Team 3 when they used to play over at Killarney's
in what seems a millennia ago.  Having loyal teams is a testament to
King Trivia.  Long live his qualitative majesty!!!) One Left in the
Chamber was quite literally a one man team but held his own keeping
pace with Tom Cheats.  Then a wild thing happened.  Tom ties for
second place in round four!  They got the ten point clue in Guess
Who.  (Somebody on that team is stalking Salma Hayek!)  Tom then
doubles down on round six and ties for first!  Only Pickles' doubling
on the final round puts them back on top and Tom Cheats walks away
with second place even though they played without a two point bonus! 
Whew!  The only thing that could have made anymore exciting would have
been a tie breaker!  Oh, the humanity! 

Round seven's challenge of naming the seven country's ending in 'stan'
generated the most mirth.  Misspellings aside, you get style points for
Turkey-stan, Turgid-stan and United-we-stan.  In the end, Quiz Master
Lou pondred that the UN Council would call a special session to rename
each country to end with 'stan-the-man'.  Somewhere in there is a
sketch with Afghanistantheman is on first!
