The Double-or-Nothing's were flying left and right last night at the Lion & Crown at Watter's
Creek. Eight teams DoN'd in Round One. Seven teams in Round Three. Four teams in Round
Five. Seven teams again in Round Six. That's the problem with Double-or-Nothing's. You think
you've got it cinched, but that one question you were over confident on wipes out your progress
and you're left having to catch up. Even so, the lowest score that night was 44!

Highlights of the evening included Quiz Master Lou's joke about the seventh planet, Uranus. The
fact that you can have a Continental breakfast in bed, but not the Continental Army. And whoever
equates of Luxembourg with NATO?

Stealth Texas brought home the gold with an 88 point win. Pickles on a Plate took second with
86 while the Hilltoppers, who grabbed the early lead and held onto it all the way to Round Six,
fumbled in the last round and ended up with third at 80 points. Excitement! A shout out to
newbie Team Shine and welcome to a club you can't get out of!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

QUIZ RECAP

The Lion & Crown in Allen was on fire last night as eleven teams converged for our Thursday ritual.
It was like old home week, too. The return of some old friends we haven't seen in a while sparked
fond memories and brought out the reunion spirit in all of us.

First of all, a big welcome back to the Ninja Turtles. That team has been gone for over a month
and it was evident why as Alex and Maggie proudly displayed their newest teammate. Welcome to
the wonderful world of Trivia, little Luke! Another team we haven't seen in some time showed as
well. The Footclan! So guess what? The big battle was between these two titans. NT's
grabbed the lead in Round Four, but Footclan stole it in Round Seven with a precision Double-or-
Nothing at the last second. Exciting. Classic. Apropos. For those whose beliefs tend towards
predestiny, the alignment of having Round Six be about matching video game characters to their
weapon of choice should have hit them like a nunchuk. This irony was certainly not lost on Quiz
Master Lou.

We also welcome back team Pilarinsky. They came, they saw, they did not conquer, unfortunately.
We enjoyed their presence nonetheless. A shout out to newbie team Fashionably Late, who traipsed
in just as Quiz Master Lou started Round One. More cosmic coinkydink. Welcome back to the Smart
Asses, who are shaping up to be trivia contenders.

In celebration of our Round Seven subject matter, the state of Missouri, Quiz Master Lou told a
joke about a Texas rancher and a Missouri farmer. The Texan boasted that he could get in his
truck and drive all day without ever crossing his ranch's boundary. The MO farmer replied, "Yeah,
I had a truck like that, once." By the way, QM Lou's joke fell so flat he thought someone had
died. In fact, all of QM Lou's jokes bite the dust last night to the point that QM Lou threatened
to stop telling jokes, to which some wag said, "Maybe you should start!"

Oh well, have a great weekend, everybody!

Welly, welly, welly, welly, well... Which, for those of you in the know, is a catchphrase from
the lead character in an Anthony Burgess novel made into a film by Stanley Kubrick. Which has
absolutely no bearing whatsoever on last night's quiz at the Lion & Crown in Allen, but is a saying
which Quiz Master Lou uses when he's feeling mischievous. And QM Lou was feeling mischievous after
having a few belts of what he believes was a conspiracy between the bartending team of Kito and
Derek to gradually increase the alcohol content of his drinks last night. Having been slowly
pickled by those two publicans, the night seemed to get incrementally more pixie-like as the quiz
wore on.

Observations on a quiz:

1. Movie advertising works, particularly in a sports bar with a dozen large screen TVs. A
commercial for The Nun came on during the game! Nuff said.

2. Galileo's scandal stole some of Copernicus' thunder on the heliocentric thing, centuries later.

3. Ice-T, Ice Cube, Vanilla Ice, it's still rapper rap to me! (with apologies to Billy Joel)

4. As many guessed General Ackbar as guessed Admiral Ackbar, making QM Lou believe that the day
the Army vs. Navy contest for control of Space Force is closer than you think!

5. Pac-Man fruits? What can I say? Except that it reminded me of the story of the Lumberjack who
went into the magic forest to cut down a tree. Just as he was about to strike with his axe, the
tree cried out, "Wait! Stop! I'm a talking tree!" To which Mr. Lumberjack replied, "And you
will dialogue..."

On a more somber note, we all lifted our glasses to Burt Reynolds, who passed yesterday. May his
cloud in heaven bear that Pontiac Trans-Am emblem. Have a great weekend everyone!
