About Liberation Brewing Co

Greetings, partisans! Like you, we heard the siren song, girded our loins, and joined the cause. The cause of absolute devotion to local craft beer. Three former mild mannered chaps born and raised in Long Beach, CA. became brewing zealots, howling at the heavens:

LIBERATION!

Our brewery, forged from equal parts Mos Eisley cantina and a Tom Waits fever dream, is a mighty 5 barrel production facility with tasting room. A safe haven for workers, story tellers, shamans, down-n-out detectives, street samurai, graffiti artists, revolutionaries, punks, drunks, con artists, and pirates. Sit for a pint and a tale… or three. Cheers!

One of the nicest things about being a quizmaster is all the cool people you get to meet hosting shows. Tonight, we had several teams return from last week, one team (who assured me of their victory as they claimed their quiz booklet) returning after taking several weeks off, and a number of new teams, including Tres Bitches, who signed up at King Trivia tonight. They had only stopped in for some chicken and ended up staying for some trivia. Welcome, ladies!

Round 1, the General Knowledge round, kicked off the evening. Ten teams started the evening, and at the end of the round, Hot Ham Water had taken the early lead.

Round 2, the Picture Round, saw an eleventh team, Brew Crew, join in. Tonight's questions were about movies and television shows featuring actors or characters named Molly. This was kind of a toughie for both quizmaster and the teams, as only four teams were able to get five of the eight correct answers. Hot Ham Water maintained its slim lead over Anuses for Eyes.

Round 3, where all the questions or answers referenced a baby animal name, saw perfect scores from a couple of teams. At the end of the round, Hot Ham Water still held the lead but saw an additional challenge from Tequila Mockingbird.

Round 4, the Guess Who round, perplexed a number of teams. No team attempted the ten-point clue, while two teams were able to successfully guess the answer at the eight-point clue. Hot Ham Water still maintained their lead, but Anuses for Eyes was able to overtake Tequila Mockingbird to reclaim second place.

Round 5, where we found the connection between nine answers, saw our only successful Double or Nothing of the night, which Anuses for Eyes used to take a commanding lead over the other teams.

Round 6, matching the documents to their creators or authors, really threw several teams for a loop. Expected answers like Alexander Hamilton and John Grisham were nowhere to be found, as teams struggled to figure out who really did write The Federalist Papers or The Pelican Brief. With only one round remaining, Anuses for Eyes maintained their double-digit lead.

Your quizmaster is glad he wasn't playing Round 7 tonight because he does not follow college football and maybe would have gotten two of the answers correct. But one team, Rose Between Thorns, did get all ten correct, but it wouldn't be enough to catch Anuses for Eyes, who would end up taking the title this week after placing second last week.

Congratulations and thank yous to all the teams who played this evening. I hope to see all of you next Thursday night.

QUIZ RECAP

Greetings and Salutations, fellow trivia lovers. It is I, Quizmaster Edward, giving you the recap of our exciting, tense, ever-changing game. First off, I would like to thank everyone who was so kind and patient during my first show at Liberation Brewery. I was amazed at how quickly so many of you were ready to go, even though I had arrived extra early to get the lay of the land. Ah, but enough of me yapping. Let's get to the recap!

Round 1, the General Knowledge round, was, as expected, a fairly close race out of the gate. Between the nine teams we started with, including the new team Space Invader, who signed up at KingTrivia just before the start of the show, only three points separated first place from ninth. It was anyone's game.

Round 2, the Picture Round, was devoted to celebrities with the last name Black. Being a huge movie fan, I was surprised to see so many people recognized a not super famous writer and director, more than a very famous actor or a rather famous comic with the same last name. At the end of the round, A Few Good Schmucks would hold a one-point lead over Anuses for Eyes and Quid Pro Paleo.

Round 3 saw answers that had something to do with famous endings. Ironically, one of the questions was about the movie Rocky, and Rocky III happened to be playing on the big screen in the bar, so we had to lateral to a music question instead. This was not the best scoring round of the evening, as all teams struggled here, including a tenth team that would join us mid-round. At the end of the round, we would have a three-way tie for first.

It was at this point we would have the beer flight question. Appropriately, the question I came up with was about National Beer Can Appreciation Day, which would be the day after this night of quizzing. Maybe it was too obscure a question because no team came within half a decade of the answer "In what year was canned beer introduced?" Two teams did hit within six years, but no one got the follow-up question either ("Which two canned beers were introduced that day?"), so we had two teams enjoy a free flight of beer.

Round 4, the Guess Who? round, was always a favorite of mine when my wife and I were King Trivia players. Tonight's famous person was one of my comedy heroes growing up, but I have to admit that I wouldn't have been able to figure out who they were until the six-point clue myself. Sadly, we had more teams guess incorrectly than correctly, and at the end of the round, AfE would hold a two-point lead over Quid Pro Paleo and the Schmucks.

Round 5, Find the Connection, celebrated one of the most popular and enduring animated shows on television. I would have gotten the connection only after Question 9 myself, and I would have missed at least two of the questions. But Quid Pro Paleo did correctly choose all ten answers, putting them one-point behind AfE.

Round 6 asked our quizzers to match the novel with its author. This was another round where the quizzers and the Quizmaster struggled. Only one team, Quid Pro Paleo, was able to match more than half the books to their authors, and they would take a razor-thin lead over AfE.

Our final round, involving the most popular gift cards of 2019, would see a number of answers you'd think should be on the list but weren't. Whodathunk an internet gaming gift card would be more popular than one for the most popular fast-food restaurant? Not me. This was another one where no team had a consensus of the answers. And at the end of the night, it would be Quid Pro Paleo, a team I used to compete against at another venue on a different evening, would maintain their one-point lead over AfE.

As you can see from the pictures, the joint was pretty hopping last night. Congratulations to our winners this week, and to all our returning and new teams who made for an exciting game. I look forward to seeing all of you next week. And I hope Generation X will sign up to become an official team before the next show.

Thank you.

This was an amazing week to cap off my fabulous time spent being Quizmaster at Liberation Brewing Company. As this was my last show, it was bitter-sweet to say goodbye to a place and to people I grew fond of seeing on a weekly basis. This week we had an amazing turnout! There were puppies and tons of beer! Our 3rd place "No Nothing's" has 65 points! They were narrowly bested by our 2nd place team "Anuses For Eyes" who had 66 points! Our 1st place team "Travling Inquiznito" earned an impressive 78 points! Thank you Liberation and King Trivia for giving me this opportunity to learn and grow! For the last time, Quizmaster Nicky out!
