About Murphy's Pub

On May 18, 1981, a year after Mt. St. Helen's blew, Seattle's first Irish bar opened: Murphy's Irish Pub. That's right. We've been around for more than thirty years. When Chris Barnes and Dan Cowan originally opened Murphy's, it stood where Starbucks stands today, a half a block to the east (a Radio Shack stood on the corner of 45th and Meridian, where Murphy's is today). Dan left shortly after (and went on to open The Tractor Tavern in Ballard), while Chris slowly built a Seattle institution. For years, its stage was host to the nationally syndicated Sandy Bradley's Potluck, a sort of Prairie Home Companion of Seattle, featuring traditional old-time American music, ragtime and blues to movie cartoon sound tracks and novelty songs. Being the first Irish pub, it managed to log a few firsts along the way: the first bar in Seattle to start a St. Patrick's Day tradition, the first bar in Seattle to pour micro brews from the tap (Redhook opened in Fremont in 1982), and first in the hearts of its patrons all the way. On February 12th, 2015, Murphy's Pub reopened under new management and ownership. The new crew is Phil and Chelley Bassett, and Eamonn Davey. After the much needed facelift, you'll find that Murphy's is still pretty much the same: a bar in the Irish tradition, where you can chit chat with friends over a Guinness or Murphy's and other great Northwest beers, dine on great tasting food, listen to some live music a few nights a week (Irish music jam session on Mondays), and just relax after a long day.

The Seattle Sounders progressed a little further in the MLS playoffs as we played trivia this week before we all retreated to the warmth of family and the fullness of Thanksgiving Feast. This week I am thankful to all the teams that came by with their visiting families for a night of King Trivia at Murphy's.

This week, we found out that Ben Franklin had it out for eagles, but he loved turkeys. So this Thanksgiving, let's be thankful Old Ben didn't have his way.

Here are the lyrics to a song by Perry Como that reminds me of how thankful I am to live in the Emerald City:

The bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle
And the hills the greenest green, in Seattle
Like a beautiful child, growing up, free an' wild
Full of hopes an' full of fears, full of laughter, full of tears
Full of dreams to last the years, in Seattle
. . . in Seattle!

Your Quizmaster,

Jimmy

At Murphy's this week, we packed the house and told the rain to go away! So many great new and returning players and teams this week joined us.

The highlight of the night was when I played a special request of Jesse's Girl for BAB. That little extra 80s spirit must have helped propel them into their tiebreaker with Grudging Participants for first place. The Grudging Participants came closest to guessing the box office revenue for Space Jam, so they won a $25 gift card to Murphy's with BAB getting a $15 one and Murphy The Dog placing 3rd, nabbing a 10$ gift card.

Join us next week for our Pre-Turkey Day Trivia night on Tuesday at 7:30 at Murphy's! I may just break out the ol' pilgrim costume I keep around for just such an occasion...
