About Murphy's Pub

On May 18, 1981, a year after Mt. St. Helen's blew, Seattle's first Irish bar opened: Murphy's Irish Pub. That's right. We've been around for more than thirty years. When Chris Barnes and Dan Cowan originally opened Murphy's, it stood where Starbucks stands today, a half a block to the east (a Radio Shack stood on the corner of 45th and Meridian, where Murphy's is today). Dan left shortly after (and went on to open The Tractor Tavern in Ballard), while Chris slowly built a Seattle institution. For years, its stage was host to the nationally syndicated Sandy Bradley's Potluck, a sort of Prairie Home Companion of Seattle, featuring traditional old-time American music, ragtime and blues to movie cartoon sound tracks and novelty songs. Being the first Irish pub, it managed to log a few firsts along the way: the first bar in Seattle to start a St. Patrick's Day tradition, the first bar in Seattle to pour micro brews from the tap (Redhook opened in Fremont in 1982), and first in the hearts of its patrons all the way. On February 12th, 2015, Murphy's Pub reopened under new management and ownership. The new crew is Phil and Chelley Bassett, and Eamonn Davey. After the much needed facelift, you'll find that Murphy's is still pretty much the same: a bar in the Irish tradition, where you can chit chat with friends over a Guinness or Murphy's and other great Northwest beers, dine on great tasting food, listen to some live music a few nights a week (Irish music jam session on Mondays), and just relax after a long day.

Murphy's had a great turnout for trivia on Halloween. Costumed people came to eat, drink, and be merry while playing trivia with friends. Murphy's kicked in prizes for best costumes (special congrats to Thor and the beautiful Witch of Wallingford). The costume contest was especially hard to judge due to the overwhelming amount of great costumes at the pub.

The under-28 crowd had an easier time with the picture round (2), as it included many very recent horror movie icons. Three teams (Medieval Torture Machines, Mueller... Mueller, and Old School Seattle Fans) captured double-or-nothing on the themed round. Masters of None had a perfect 6th round, choosing all of the correct years for 10/31 events. Tree Tree Won, which included a familiar Asgardian and a mysterious woman from Jakku, had a perfect 1st round! And finally, I'd like to give a shout out to the 3 Masq-a-teers who had the most fitting team name for their appearance on Tuesday AND consistent high scores in every round.

It was really my pleasure to host trivia for you on Oct. 31. See you next week -- Quizmaster Max

On Tuesday night Seattle's weather was beautiful, but the performance of this week's trivia players was even prettier. We had a lot of high scores this week, and our top three teams for the evening placed only separated by one point each. Yet again, Tacos, Tacos, Tacos took first place, strutting their stuff with the unibrow round and the first round hodgepodge. 7th Circle of Hello Kitty (my favorite team name for the evening) landed TWO double-or-nothings! Newcomers Peter's Piper's Pickle really came out of nowhere, scoring double-or-nothings in the sixth and 7th rounds. I can humbly say that I would not have done as well in the fonts round, but seven teams scored double-or-nothing, four teams got 10/10, and two teams got 9/10. Incredible. Nice job! As usual, the food, bar, and service staff at Murphy's was great. I love this bar.

See you next week for trivia, and don't forget to wear a costume. -- Quizmaster Max

Trivia at Murphy's was great!

Newcomers, Tacos! Tacos! Tacos! snagged first place in a tie-breaker, and Guns and Primroses edged into third place with the same tie-breaking question. Nice job to Safer than Kobe Steel (2nd) and Low Standards (4th). This was the first time I witnessed all teams get the correct answer in Round #4 -- and three teams successfully earned 10 points by answering Jon Snow after the very first clue! To my surprise, and maybe, a little disturbingly, the players all did really well in the identify-the-serial-killer-pic round. The Substitutes cleaned up the dessert round, matching the most desserts to their respective restaurant chains.

See you next week for another good time.--Quizmaster Max
