About Murphy's Pub

On May 18, 1981, a year after Mt. St. Helen's blew, Seattle's first Irish bar opened: Murphy's Irish Pub. That's right. We've been around for more than thirty years. When Chris Barnes and Dan Cowan originally opened Murphy's, it stood where Starbucks stands today, a half a block to the east (a Radio Shack stood on the corner of 45th and Meridian, where Murphy's is today). Dan left shortly after (and went on to open The Tractor Tavern in Ballard), while Chris slowly built a Seattle institution. For years, its stage was host to the nationally syndicated Sandy Bradley's Potluck, a sort of Prairie Home Companion of Seattle, featuring traditional old-time American music, ragtime and blues to movie cartoon sound tracks and novelty songs. Being the first Irish pub, it managed to log a few firsts along the way: the first bar in Seattle to start a St. Patrick's Day tradition, the first bar in Seattle to pour micro brews from the tap (Redhook opened in Fremont in 1982), and first in the hearts of its patrons all the way. On February 12th, 2015, Murphy's Pub reopened under new management and ownership. The new crew is Phil and Chelley Bassett, and Eamonn Davey. After the much needed facelift, you'll find that Murphy's is still pretty much the same: a bar in the Irish tradition, where you can chit chat with friends over a Guinness or Murphy's and other great Northwest beers, dine on great tasting food, listen to some live music a few nights a week (Irish music jam session on Mondays), and just relax after a long day.

Murphy's trivia players have a lot of culinary knowledge. Eight of the teams earned perfect scores in round 2, with four of them being confident enough to go double-or-nothing. Another big hit was Dolly Parton -- six teams answered within the first clue of round 4, and the other three teams after the second clue. It's really interesting to see so many Dolly Parton fans in Seattle. Round five was rough, in that almost all teams knew 9/10 answers but couldn't double-or-nothing as a result of question #3. Congrats to Adult Day Care Center for knowing the answer to #3 and going all the way on that round. Finally, round 7 showed that the trivia players know their cars, despite having a great public trans system in Seattle.

As usual, Murphy's crew was awesome to us and I can't wait for next week. All the best, -- Quizmaster Max

Trivia at Murphy's was great on Tuesday night. For starters, six of eleven teams had perfect first rounds. The second round produced lower scores, but teams kept their chins up and performed really well for the rest of the game. In the seventh round, two teams captured double-or-nothings with countries in the western hemisphere, and most teams had 8- or 9/10 correct. I don't think I've seen high scores like this before in round seven. Overall the evening was a mix of first-timers and year-long trivia veterans, making the competition both classic and refreshing.

We had a lovely Tuesday night at Murphy's. Congrats to everyone, including our top three teams for the evening. Emma? managed to pull off third place at the last minute, really cleaning up on the Kardashian round. Pop that Trivia Cherry must have some architects on it, because they nailed the international landmarks round. Thank You Again, John McCain played a steady game all night. It's pretty clear that the overall majority of the trivia players on Tuesday like George Clooney movies more than the Kardashians. See you next week, --Quizmaster Max
