The frigid temperatures could not stop the BEST TURNOUT WE'VE EVER HAD! 10 teams, 54 players tonight at Collision, thank you all for coming! Last week's winners Mim & Maple were high scorers in Round 1 with 6 out of 6, but both Trebek's Rejects and Trivia Trumps Debates set the tone for the night; each converted a successful double-or nothing to jump 9 points clear of the pack, and those two would be neck-and-neck through the final round. In fact those 2 teams would double again in Round 3, along with 4-Way Stop (who took over 3rd place at that stage, 10 points behind the leaders). Fully half the field took a -1 in the Guess Who round (virtually all of them guessing Hugh Grant): Tequila Is Not A Patronus, 4-Way Stop, #momjeans, Cammie Hates The Cello and Limoncello all dropped (seemingly) out of contention after 4 rounds, while Mim & Maple and first-timers Galantine's Gals were high scorers, correctly naming Colin Firth for 8 points. Trebek's Rejects and newcomers Mutha Smucker were high scorers in the Find The Connection round with 9 of a possible 10; the Muthas finished strong, scoring 9, 10, 1nd 9 in the final 3 rounds to finish 4th. A failed double bid by Trivia Trumps Debates left them 9 points behind Trebek's Rejects after 5 rounds; the Rejects scored 10 of a possible 10 (along with Mutha Smucker) to build their lead to 10 over Trivia Trumps Debates, but the table tightened significantly when no fewer than 3 teams successfully doubled for 20 points: Tequila Is Not A Patronus, 4-Way Stop and#momjeans all jumped up in the standings. Incredibly, Tequila Is Not A Patronus hit another double in Round 7; when Trebek's Rejects could only muster 3 out of 10 in the final round, Tequila Is Not A Patronus leapfrogged the field to win; 24 points behind the leaders after 5 rounds, they came all the way back with 40 points in the final 2 rounds to edge Trebek's Rejects by 3 points, with Trivia Trumps Debates finishing 3rd. Perhaps that is justice being done for Tequila, who lost by a point last week after pointing out the quizmaster's error in awarding them 1 point too many; the sportsmanship always on display at Collision (all teams applaud everyone's score each round) was rewarded, big time, tonight.
Thanks to all who turned out tonight; see you next week when #dadbods makes its debut!
Not even a blizzard could keep tonight's game from taking place; the storm kept attendance from the record numbers of recent weeks, but a good turnout turned into a great game, complete with a tie for 1st!
Tequila Is Not A Patronus made a statement right out of the gate, converting a successful double-or-nothing to jump 6 points clear of the nearest competitors (#momjeans, who scored 6 of a possible 6 in Round 1). #momjeans were high scorers in the (Lady Gaga) Picture Round....with 3 of a possible 8; Patronus, 4-Way Stop and newcomers Meatloaf and Mim&Maple each got 2 right. Trebek's Rejects, #momjeans and Patronus each scored 5 of a possible 6 in the Theme Round; Tequila Is Not A Patronus had originally (erroneously) been given a score of 6 and self-reported a missed answer, a point which would have repercussions later. Mim&Maple were the only team to correctly answer for 6 points in the Guess Who round; the other 5 teams all figured it out at the 4-point clue. Tequila Is Not A Patronus again got them all right, scoring 10 of 10 in the Find The Connection round, while Meatloaf and Trebek's Rejects each scored 9. At this point Patronus were 8 points clear of #momjeans and 10 points in front of Trebek's Rejects and Meatloaf.....when out of nowhere, Mim&Maple converted a double in the (license plate motto) handout round to jump from last place into a 1-point lead over Patronus (4-Way Stop's failed double bid dropped them out of the running). In Round 7 both Meatloaf and Trebek's Rejects went all out, trying for doubles; sadly Meatloaf only got 8 right and Trebek's Rejects agonizingly got 9 of 10, each team netting a zero to end their night. Leaders Mim&Maple finished strong with 8 points in Round 7; incredibly, Tequila Is Not A Patronus scored 9 to finish in a flat-footed tie with Mim&Maple, necessitating the rarely-used tiebreaker. (At this point Tequila Is Not A Patronus jokingly asked if they could have back the point they had given back by self-reporting) Though neither team's guess was remotely close (to the number of pubs in which Bruce Masters has had a drink), first-timers Mim&Maple were closer and took the honors for the night, disappointing Patronus who had led wire-to-wire.
A great time was had by all, hopefully the weather will cooperate more next week. See you all then!
* Won Tiebreaker
We had ANOTHER full house at Collision tonight, including a team of first-timers who acquitted themselves well....and a tiebreaker for 2nd place!
Both 4-Way Stop and Trivia Trumps Debates converted successful double-or-nothing bids right out of the gate to lead by 6 points after Round 1; Tequila Is Not A Patronus, Trebek's Rejects, #momjeans and newcomers Blonde Bitches were high scorers in Round 2, identifying 6 of the 8 images and trimming the leaders' advantage to 5 points. #momjeans got all 6 right in the Shape Happens round; Tequila Is Not A Patronus did them one better by doubling, taking the lead by a point over 4-Way Stop and 5 over #momjeans. Tequila were again high scorers in the Guess Who round, correctly answering for 8 points (5 teams, including Just Us 2, answered correctly for 6 points while both Trebek's Rejects and Limoncello guessed Shirley Temple and took a -1, effectively knocking them out of the running for the night). But just when Tequila Is Not A Patronus seemed poised to rule the day, they went for a double in Round 5 and only got 9 right (the same fate befell Trebek's Rejects). To be fair, each team guessed "Last Train To Busan" (directed by Yeon Sang-ho) which did fit the theme. 4-Way Stop scored 9 of a possible 10 in that round to move back into the lead, 2 points in front of Trivia Trumps Debates and 5 in front of #momjeans. 4-Way Stop followed that with another9 in the (extremely challenging) handout round to pad their lead; #momjeans tallied 7 to move within a point of Trivia Trumps Debates. Round 7 proved to be the most challenging to date, as #momjeans were high scorers....with 3 out of 10. 4-Way Stop's 1 point gave them the honors on the night (and the 6-pak, to be conveniently divided among 6 players), but Trivia Trumps Debates' 2 points left them in a tie for 2nd with #momjeans and necessitated the rarely-used tiebreaker question (in this case the number of viewers of the Breaking Bad series finale in its first airing). Debates guessed 23 million, while #momjeans' guess of 6.8 million was far closer to the actual number 10.3 million, netting them 2nd place. Kudos to newbies Blonde Bitches for a respectable 5th place finish.
Looking forward to another great night next week....see you all then!
