There's a new kid in town at Kilarney's. The Allen Fairview Chamber Friends (henceforth referred to as the AFCF) have returned to
challenge the status quo, knocking resident champs, the Tequila Mockingbirds down to third place. (And they were only able to do
that by winning the tie breaker from I'll Google It!) The Poonswagglers have stayed consistently in the winner's circle, however, and ended up snagging second place honors.
Last night's quiz has prompted Quizmaster Lou to wax poetic on the variety of subjects put before the competitors.
There once was a toy shop Funko Pop
Whose merchandise made it to the top
Twas not the big heads
But bad taste instead
Critics claim with fury they're a flop!
In old Egypt, a quaint little band
Built some pyramids out on the sand
How they did it, you see?
Is still a mystery
But the rest of us still think it's grand.
Round Five is Find the Connection
Comic strips were the inflection
Superman went AWOL
Spidey's not on the wall
Perhaps super hero injection?
Welcome to newbies Braying Mantis! IFFY! and Blood, Bath and Beyond, keep up the alliance. The questions are bound to land in
your wheelhouse eventually. And the divorcees will be reunited! Have a wonderful week folks, and if you can't manage that, go
for mediocre. Lower expectations produce no disappointments. The wonderfulness will happen naturally and your happiness will
be greater.

More teams! More players! That seems to be the trend here at Kilarney's on Tuesday nights. The cavernous hall was raucous with crowd noise as Quizmaster Lou held court for our sovereign, King Trivia. It was like a scene out of a Robin Hood movie, where the impoverished bandits of Sherwood Forest feast and fight after a successful raid, each team representing a character out of Howard Pyle's classic. (Or pick your film version. Some of you will have imprinted on Kevin Costner, some on Russell Crowe and some even on Disney. As for me, I'll always be in Errol Flynn's camp!)
The Poonswagglers (who won big after two successful Double-or-Nothings) outpaced everyone, finishing 14 points ahead of the next best score for a well deserved first place win. Given their penchant for food, drink and gusto, plus their canon-like knowledge of trivia, they would have to be our Friar Tuck this evening. Tequila Mockingbirds, who took second, with their quiet good charm and reserved demeanor, much like a medieval lute, would be naturally cast in the role of Will Scarlet. Rounding out Robin's trio of best buds, and completing the winner's circle with a third place victory, another alliance between IFFY! and Blood, Bath & Beyond (playing as BBB this time) would squarely assign them as Little John. (I'm certain they had the tallest man in the pub at their table, but don't mention type casting!)
I'll Google It!, in fourth place just outside the winner's circle, seems a fitting choice for King Richard the Lion Hearted, who, in the legend, was ever mentioned and referred to, but rarely present. The Divorcees, making a good showing, demure at the bar and looking well, represent the essence of Maid Marian. Enter our newcomers, the Allen Fairview Chamber Friends. A well appointed, good looking bunch of folks, they embodied the spirit of nobility. To them, we cast the role (and in no way does this cast aspersions of character, merely an actor's role) of Prince John. Like that ill fated king, who squandered the throne of England on his cronies while Richard was away at the Crusades, so too did AFCF gamble too many Double-or-Nothing's and fail (four times in a row!). Finally, the role of Sheriff of Nottingham goes to team Woosah. They tried to multitask, playing pool and trivia simultaneously from the game room, but couldn't manage either. Well, I don't personally know how their pool game went, but they dropped out of KTPQ after round three. There was a dropped drink and a broken glass in their area, much like the Sheriff's ill fated pursuit of Robin Hood. Lots of clamor but no results.
And who, do you ask, played our titular hero? Well, I think you can deduce by now, that role was immodestly played by yours truly! After all, there's a little bit of Quizmaster Lou in all of us. But since I am Quizmaster Lou... Most of it must be in me! Have a great week, everyone!

Cross over migration is happening twixt the ole L&C in Allen and the cozy folks here at Kilarney's Irish. Pickles on a Plate showed up out of the blue and sauntered in for a third place win just as pretty as you please. Resident champs Tequila Mockingbirds yet once again proved their prowess with the trivia knowledge by squeezing into first place after a second place holding pattern. This robbed the Poonswagglers of their lead and knocked them into second, instead.
Team spirit was in evidence all around as IFFY! formed an unholy alliance with Blood, Bath & Beyond. It looked like a gathering of King Arthur's knights as they sat at their round table, mapping out a campaign of trivia strategy. Alas, alack the day, twas for naught, for though they fought hard and best all the rest, they planted their final banner just outside the winner's circle for a fourth place ranking. (Some might say, a fourth place rankling... Heh, heh, heh...)
We welcome the newcomers, the Nerf Herders, who, plucky by their nature, wondrous in their awe and confident by their inexperience, did not finish last, even though they were just two, good natured lads at the bar. Hats off to you, gentlemen. You've earned your trivia battle chevrons this day!
And welcome back to I'll Google It!. Ne'er so vainglorious their countenance that their elfish charms eludes them. This exchange so paints their virtues...
IGI: "If we can't identify the clergy in the picture, can we get extra points if we write the lord's prayer in Latin? We go to church all the time!"
QMLOU: "If you go to church so much, why don't you know the nun's name? There, I've just run rings around your logic..."
Some quizzes are born great. Some quizzes achieve greatness, and some quizzes have greatness thrust into them... Hard. With no mercy. So it was with this quiz at Kilarney's. For when the thing was over and prizes awarded, the patrons left the pub... The rest, was silence...
