QUIZ RECAP

The cavernous hall that is Kilarney's Irish Pub echoed with excitement during last night's King Trivia Quiz set. Much of this was set off by newbie team I'll Google It!, whose boisterous enthusiasm livened up an already energized crowd. Welcome also to the daring duo, Dr. Morningwood, who drolly reminded Quizmaster Lou what it was once like. (You had to be there... Or, maybe not.)

The Poonswagglers, normally able contenders for the winner's circle, had a great start, but hamstrung themselves with an early, incorrect Round 4 guess as to who our famous painter was. It reminded this quizmaster of one Franz Liebkind, who once exclaimed, "Der Fuhrer vas a great painter! He could paint an entire apahtment in von ahfternoon. Two coats!"

Other quiz madness included the universal wrong guess that John Leguizamo was Jim Carey or that Macklemore was Elton John. Sometimes, one might think that King Trivia is trying to fool us! Nah... And talk about a reversal of fortunes, finding the connection in Round 5 is usually a lot harder than guessing the answers to the questions, but it was the other way around this time. (Unless you were intimately knowledgeable of Johnny Cash's discography!)

Excitement abounded. I'll Google It! beat IFFY! out of a third place tie breaker. Resident champs, Tequila Mocking birds fell to second place while the Divorcees snagged first, all on account of they knew a few more places where coffee came from.

Well, that's all the news that's fit to print. But since this is going up on the internet, the standards are a lot lower. (That's a joke, son...) Have a great week! So sayeth Quizmaster Lou...

QUIZ RECAP

Kilarney's crowd may have been a low turn out, but the enthusiasm was stadium sized as Quizmaster Lou emceed another Tuesday's KT pub quiz. Regulars IFFY!, Blood, Bath & Beyond, Poonswagglers and Tequila Mockingbirds stood off against newcomers Ram Rob 96, the Jarheads and Team Diego.

Tequila Mockingbirds grabbed the lead with a successful Double-or-Nothing in Round Two and held it all the way to the end, reclaiming their title of resident champs. Newbies Team Diego (from San Diego, CA no less!) sailed into a second place win with some consistent, correct answers. Poor IFFY! got knocked out of third place in the final two rounds by the Poonswagglers, who swaggled their way into the winner's circle with shoulders and elbows.

Some fun moments with Quizmaster Lou's pirate joke in honor of the Theme Round. I'll only reveal the punchline here... "I only had the hook for one day!" The best desperately wrong answers to the name of Blackbeard's ship were the Black Pearl, the Jolly Roger and the Jolly Rancher.

The true couch potatoes revealed themselves with the most right answers to the Picture round's identify the company by the commercial spokesperson as well as those who successfully matched the most TV bars with their series title for the round six Hand Out.

And finally, the round seven Trio of Science questions included some elements not on the Periodic Table beginning with the letter 'O', such as Opossium (whose properties pretend to be dormant when observed) and Obvious (whose properties are simultaneously self evident and nebulous). With answers like those, Quizmaster Lou pondered why Upsydasium and Unobtanium did not make the list.

QUIZ RECAP

The dictionary defines delectation as delight or great pleasure. That was the atmosphere at Kilarney's last night as six teams all jockeyed for the top prize in the KT quiz. The two main factors that contributed to that sublime state were the closeness of the competition and the content of the questions.

The contest itself was like watching a close run horse race with a bolt out of the gate by a solitary thoroughbred (IFFY!) and a line of contenders grappling to get ahead by their noses. IFFY! stayed ahead all night until the final round, then fell back into third place. Poonswagglers, Alcoballics and the Divorcee's ran a three way tie for two rounds running with the eventual break outs only getting them a point or so distance from the rest of the pack. Blood, Bath & Beyond acted as border collie, nipping at the heels of the pack to keep them motivated forward. Resident champs, Tequila Mockingbirds, made a fatal, if understandable, Double-or-Nothing attempt in round seven. This all led to an exciting first place tie breaker between the Alcoballics and the Poonswagglers, which the latter won first place by getting closest to the top of the Eiffel Tower (plus antennae!)

"If diversity be the food of pleasure, play on!" I hope I didn't make ole Wild Bill Shakespeare turn over in his grave with that paraphrase. I make that comment on the quality of the questions, which were well balanced and spread across a wide variety of fields that proved successfully challenging and intellectually stimulating. The crowd especially appreciated the historical aspect of the Guess Who round and Find the Connection was tough but fair. The Visual round, Theme round and the Match round were all great! The Box Office Mojo stats were creative, too. All in all, a perfect storm of a quiz. So sayeth Quizmaster Lou!
