Happy International Day for Democracy, ya'll! Hope you enjoyed it. The UN will go back to its standard support for tyrannical dictators and despots, but for one day at least, democracy was appreciated and respected around the world.
Of course, our celebration of democracy meant that we were free to play some trivia, and play you did. Thanks to everyone who made it out out on our last quiz of the summer. So glad it didn't snow this week. We saw some scary eyes, played some game shows and celebrated the catalog of Metallica. It was a helluva night. Plus, you all know your scotch much better than you know your Jell-O. Wish I could say I was surprised...
Congrats to newbies Man Chest Hair United and I Need A Drink on winning some great prizes and free beers, but we need to really appreciate the glory of our top 2, who battled it out neck and neck. A fateful failed double-up in Round 1 mean that Names R 4 Tombstones fell short of the title, allowing Midas Whales to take the top spot.
Next week we'll celebrate the Independence Day for Bulgaria, so bring your favorite Bulgarian dish, I'll wear a traditional Bulgarian outfit and we'll enjoy Bulgarian Folk Music throughout the night. It's gonna be great.
As an Air Force Brat, I've had the joy/suffering of living in a lot of places growing up and throughout my life. Different countries, different regions, different states. Everywhere I've lived, local residents always comment about how the weather changes every 15 minutes. In only one place has this actually been true; welcome to Colorado! We had a temperature drop of over 50 degrees, going from 90 on Monday to a "wintry mix" as a drove to Pour Tap House for tonight's quiz. Funniest thing is that I wasn't that surprised and neither were the folks inside happily singing along to Christmas carols playing on the jukebox. That's the spirit, guys!
We certainly got a lesson in perseverance tonight. The nice thing about our quiz format is that when you find a round that fits your wheelhouse, you can score big. And boy was that true. After four rounds of competition (and a not-so-accurate guess of Oliver North), they sat at a mere 13 points at the bottom of the standings. Hope was all but lost. Round 5 looked promising as they put up 6 great points.
Then, their moment of glory as, apparently, they are avid war-mongers who thrive of the thirst of battle and dream of eternal glory in Valhalla....basically, Klingons. They blitzkrieged through the round about battles faster than Stormin' Norman took Iraq. 20 points later, and they were poised for victory. And, since War is Hell, the final round was right up their alley. Kudos to Multiple Scorgasms on their victory, and a shout out to Midas Whales, whose winning streak was (briefly?) stopped. J & J had a great first-time showing and I expect big things to come!
As for next week: Never Give Up, Never Surrender!

Wow, what a way to celebrate Gloria Estefan! We had a clutch (?) Nuggets victory in Game 7 despite missing an easy layup with 3 seconds left. We had a stellar double-up by The Beefy Peaches in Round 2. Instagram reared its unfiltered, ugly head in our Connection round, but the Beastie Boys put everyone in a festive mood (after a brief scuffle, of course).
Shout out to La Patrona who covered our taco needs for the second straight week. And also to Mary and Mike for keeping the beers flowing smoothly throughout the night. I'd like to also give a special shoutout to new players Tigo Biggies for teaching me about Al Snow, a wrestling superstar that missed my teenage window of interest.
Next week will follow Labor Day festivities/observations/ignorance. So come out to blow off your workday stresses by answering questions about ice cream, heads and fictional fathers (oh wait, that was last week. Congrats to Midas Whales for continuing their winning streak.
