It was a night of love and laughter - and high scores - this week at The Backdoor Bakery and Cafe. Let's begin with the love part. Take a look at that happy couple smiling back atcha in the photo above. That dynamic duo is the brain trust called Team Pudding, who celebrated their 30 year wedding anniversary last night by racking up an impressive 69 points - finishing just one point shy of the winner's circle.
Now, as most trivia aficionados know, the traditional 30 year anniversary gift involves pearls, and the world is clearly an oyster for the Pudding crew. Congratulations, kids!
Our top team for the evening - Hodge Podge - pulled off the rare and impressive feat of answering every question correctly, and doubling every chance they could, winding up the night with the elusive perfect score of 110! Impressive! But it's not like the competition made it easy for 'em.
Take out second place finisher, for example. The Three Caballeros logged a strong 75 points, but could not provide an answer when the quizmaster inquired about a team calling itself The Three Caballeros actually had four members on the team. Curious...and suspicious, wouldn't you agree? We think it has something to do with the Russians.
AT the other end of the spectrum, and trying desperately to add points wherever they could, were Shana Maidela's and Froot Loops, who both declared that they knew the connection for Round 5 after the third question, and insisted that they should be awarded extra points for that. In fact, they insisted they be awarded extra points for all sorts of things, like kibitzing the quizmaster all night long!
To which I say NO! No kibitzing the quizmaster! We gotta maintain decorum!
See y'all next week.

People who don't believe in love at first sight will have to reconsider their position when they visit The Back Door Bakery & Cafe in Sunland-Tujunga. This stalwart quizmaster was smitten within minutes of my first visit, and by the end of the night I was entirely enthralled by this outstanding Foothill Blvd. gem!
A hardy crew of quizzers turned out last night to put themselves to the trivia test, with a Hodge Podge of intrepid players finishing in first place with a robust 57 points. That's them up there in photo #1, and if you ever need a photographic example of the old adage, "like mother, like daughter," just take a closer look at the lovely ladies in front and back. That kid's got her mom's moves down, we think! Sassy!!
Last week's winners, Back in 5, were back in 2 - second place, that is - with a good score of 54. And rounding out our top three winner's circle is Il Duderino (photo #2) with 47 points. Photo #3 features the li'l Duderino himself, giving the business to a King Trivia answer pad.
As that photo clearly illustrates, a King Trivia quiz gives participants a lot to chew on - as does the outstanding menu at The Back Door Bakery & Cafe. We hope you'll check out both one night real soon. Next week, perhaps? See ya then!

What a great venue debut. Back Door Bakery & Cafe is a perfect place for King Trivia. A quaint location that easily accommodated 9 teams and could squeeze in a few more. The staff is awesome and the patrons were totally game for whatever this was I was bringing them. Thanks to the 3 veteran teams that helped initiate this crowd.
We got off to a slow start as everyone got the feel of it, but soon it revved up into a solid competition.
Things stayed pretty tight through the first 4 rounds, until successful doubles for Back in Five and He Literally Can't Even gave them some breathing room, while Electric Ghosts used their double to get into the game. Those would be the last doubles until a shocker in round 7.
Five slowly stretched their lead, going into round 7 fairly comfortable.
Can't Even also held pat going into 7.
HodgePodge toiled in the middle of the pack for most of the game. A failed double in round 5 certainly didn't help their cause. In fact, they were sitting in 8th place after round 6. However, a successful double in round 7 vaulted them into 3rd place.
Can't Even maintained their pace and finished in 2nd, while Five had the only other succesful double in 7, launching them to a 20-point victory.
All in all, this was a great game, introducing many newcomers to King Trivia. Now that the cat's out of the bag in Sunland, I expect the place to really be rocking every Wednesday night at 6:30. Congrats to Back in Five, on the huge win, and to The Back Door Bakery for joining the craziness.
