About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

It was our first night back indoors at Hops & Scotch, and it was good to see most of our regulars there and ready to compete.  Even better was the news that as of last night, 3 of our teams were currently ranked in the top 100: We Drink and Know Things, Positively Negative, and Bella Donna!

They may not currently be ranked quite that high, but Cliston's Pistons was sure to make their mark known. They set the pace with a double or nothing in round 1 alongside Bella Donna. Bella Donna's lack of animation knowledge for the picture round kept them nipping at the heels of Cliston's Pistons all night, but ultimately they had to settle for a close 2nd place.

Here we are in the dog days of summer, which is probably why we had a few less people than usual. But those that showed up came to play some trivia, and play we did!

Smartini's and Positively Negative came out swinging with double or nothings in round 1. Sadly , The Sweet Angels had a mix-up and hadn't entered the correct code for the game, so they missed that round. Things may have turned out a bit differently tonight if not for that, as they landed in third. Unsurprisingly, our top 2 teams from round 1 ended up being the top 2 by round 7, with Smartini's taking the top spot.

Nick of Thyme, Preciate Cha, and Positively Negative all came out strong, nailing a double or nothing on the very first round to tie for the lead. After that strong start, Preciate Cha fell off somewhat, allowing We Drink and Know Things to steadily improve their standing. Preciate Cha came roaring back towards the end, though. Back to back double or nothings in rounds 5 and 6 brought them handily into the lead, and while they didn't risk another double or nothing in round 7, they did get all the answers right for a resounding 75 point finish.
