About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

Question Authority came out swinging tonight, kicking things off with a double or nothing. They held onto that lead for the entire night, finishing in first place. Preciate Cha and The Vatos duked it out for second place, finally having to answer the tiebreaker.

For the drinking round, I asked for Halloween-themed haikus. There were a lot of great ones, but ultimately there were only five prizes to give out so here are the winners:

  • Pumpkins up on top / bulging pumpkins down below / Kim Kardashian -Boo!
  • Freddy ain't scary / he's just a little bee-otch / coke keeps me awake
  • Dressing real slutty / Oh how cold my nips are / grandma would be proud
  • Candy and monsters / the dead body in my trunk / I love Halloween.
  • Fuck it up Casper / Spooky bitches want some scotch / Hop on this monster

Preciate Cha and J-Roc started neck and neck, but double or nothings in Round 3 soon had Preciate Cha in the lead, with VC Victory close behind in second. But it was a second, confident double or nothing in Round 5 that made Preciate Cha virtually untouchable for the night.

VC Victory had been holding on solidly to second place, but sadly they struggled with the last two rounds, allowing J-Roc to swoop ahead of them.

For the drinking round, everyone drew Jack-O'-Lanterns. The winners can be seen in the photo gallery...though strangely, almost half of the submissions seemed to have dicks in them! It's an interesting crowd at Hops and Scotch...

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 21760 Preciate Cha 68 4 1.000
2 21415 J-Roc 46 3 0.750

4 Livin The Dream 32 1 0.250

It was a tight competition at the start of the night between Preciate Cha and Question Authority. Question Authority held a one point lead, and both teams pulled off a double or nothing in the Picture round. But it was during the Guess Who round that Preciate Cha stumbled, allowing Question Authority to take a commanding lead. Curliano's Quizzers slowly rose throughout the night, but they were never quite able to move out of third.

Not only did Question Authority take first place, but they scored the highest during Survey Slam for the drinking round! It was initially looking like we'd have a tiebreaker, but then Question Authority turned out to be the only team to answer the final question correctly, taking the win.
