About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

There were gasps of surprise when Off in the Woods (aka Turkey Dinner) set the tone for the night by hitting a double or nothing in round 1. Not letting that go unanswered, Preciate Cha nailed their own double or nothing in round 2...but unfortunately for them, so did Off in the Woods! Determined to keep some skin in the game, The Gay Agenda hit a double or nothing in round 3. And yet again, so did Off in the Woods! That was mostly it for double or nothings...though struggling Top Gun hit one in round 6, still finishing last but now with a respectable score.

Inspired by the Academy Awards, I asked everyone to create their own movie award category and winner for the drinking round. Here are the top 5:

  • Movie with the most obvious ending: Faces of Death
  • Award for the most white male rage (tie): The Irishman and Joker
  • Best use of motherfucker: Snakes on a Plane
  • Best movie that reflects our current society: Idiocracy
  • Most gratuitous use of the n-word: Any Quentin Tarantino movie

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average

Four teams overcame their Superbowl hangovers to come in for trivia tonight! Preciate Cha and The Gay Agenda both started strong, but The Gay Agenda steadily built their lead. However, a well-timed double or nothing in the 6th round catapulted Preciate Cha into first, where they remained. Meanwhile, Army of One joined the game late but still performed well.

With tonight being the Iowa Caucus, I asked everyone for the drinking round to tell me who they'd love to see run for president (they could be real or fictional, living or dead). Here were the winners:

  • Lex Luthor. He did a good job, right...?
  • Michelle Obama. They go low. Very low. You go high, and smack down their candy asses.
  • Beethoven(the Saint Bernard). Better table manners than any current candidate.
  • Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Because these jabronies need to smell-el-el-el-el what The Rock is cookin'!
  • Bill fucking Murray.

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 21760 Preciate Cha 50 3 1.000
2 24955 The Gay Agenda 39 2 0.667
3 Army of One 24 1 0.333

On this first night of league play, Turkey Dinner tore out of the gate with a double or nothing. He held onto the lead for a long time, though The Gay Agenda, Preciate Cha and Barry Manilow's Favorite Sock were steadily gaining. The Gay Agenda made their move with a Round 5 double or nothing, catapulting into the lead. Everyone struggled with the final round, and The Gay Agenda took the night.

For the drinking round, I asked everyone to imagine they were secret agents, and tell me their codenames and signature gadget. Here are the winners:

  • Codename: Ball Slugger. Gadget: Blunt ass object that can act as a bat to the balls for a quick getaway.
  • Codename: Lady Garden. Gadget: A hedge trimmer that doubles as a vibrator.
  • Codename: Nurse Betty. Gadget: A ring that when you shake my hand you feel happy for 24 hrs.
  • Codename: Detective Literal. Gadget: A gun.
  • Codename: Detective Figural. Gadget: A "gun."
