About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

The night before Mardi Gras we were laissez les bons temps rouler at Hops and Scotch! The Gay Agenda started things off strong in round one, nailing the answers. For the longest time it looked like they'd be untouchable...several teams were struggling with the questions, and turns out We Drink & We Know Things had accidentally indicated they were going for a double or nothing on a couple of their rounds, thwarting their efforts to catch up. In a stunning late game turnabout, The Nord's Bored demonstrated their literary knowledge in round 6 with a double or nothing, suddenly coming into a dead heat with The Gay Agenda. Improbably, both teams also scored 7 points in round 7, taking it down to a tiebreaker. It was close, but The Gay Agenda pulled out the win, with The Nord's Bored happy to come in second.

For the drinking round, I thought it would be fun to play a little "What Do You Meme?" Each team had 7 cards to play over 5 rounds, and you can see the winning memes in the photo gallery.

Apparently the way to celebrate President's Day is to play trivia, as Hops and Scotch was packed tonight! Almost half of the teams aced the first round with a double or nothing. There was a lot of back and forth with teams from that point on...it was looking like just about anyone's game. Shimada was holding on to a slim victory when they left during round 6, allowing the power to shift amongst their closest competitors. In the end, THE BROserweights ended strong taking first, with Preciate Cha and Question Authority tied for second. Preciate Cha played it a little too safe during the tiebreaker, ceding victory to Question Authority.

For the drinking round, I asked everyone if they were the POTUS, what would they be doing on President's Day. Here are the winning responses:

  • In honor of the current President, I've been grabbing pussies all day!!! (I have 9 cats)
  • Eating KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell all from the same gas station.
  • Riding my horse through the White House.
  • Not Melania.
  • Wake-n bake-n then I'm makin' bacon.

There were gasps of surprise when Off in the Woods (aka Turkey Dinner) set the tone for the night by hitting a double or nothing in round 1. Not letting that go unanswered, Preciate Cha nailed their own double or nothing in round 2...but unfortunately for them, so did Off in the Woods! Determined to keep some skin in the game, The Gay Agenda hit a double or nothing in round 3. And yet again, so did Off in the Woods! That was mostly it for double or nothings...though struggling Top Gun hit one in round 6, still finishing last but now with a respectable score.

Inspired by the Academy Awards, I asked everyone to create their own movie award category and winner for the drinking round. Here are the top 5:

  • Movie with the most obvious ending: Faces of Death
  • Award for the most white male rage (tie): The Irishman and Joker
  • Best use of motherfucker: Snakes on a Plane
  • Best movie that reflects our current society: Idiocracy
  • Most gratuitous use of the n-word: Any Quentin Tarantino movie
