About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

It was a wild night at Hops and Scotch! 4 of the 5 teams hit a double or nothing in round 1...and then the same 4 teams did so again in round 3! It looked for awhile like it was going to be a tight 3-way race between We Drink and Know Things, Positively Negative, and Drinking and Thinking. But then Kathy's Kunundrum did a 3rd double or nothing in round 5, catapulting them into 1st place where they remained. It was no surprise that we ended up with a tie for 2nd place, but ultimately it was Drinking and Thinking that won the tie breaker.

It was a nailbiter of a game tonight! Totally a-Paul-ing had a solid showing, but couldn't quite keep up with Preciate Cha, We Drink and Know Things, and Drinking and Thinking. I was thinking we might have to go to a tie breaker as the latter two were in a dead heat, but We Drink and Know Things heartbreakingly missed just one answer on their round 7 double or nothing, allowing Drinking and Thinking to take first place just 1 point ahead of Preciate Cha

As this was our last game before Halloween, for the drinking round I held a costume contest. Not everyone deigned to participate, but the enthusiasm of those that did more than made up for the others. Of particular note were Totally a-Paul-ing, each team member of which dressed up as me, replete with bald caps, their own King Trivia t-shirts, and even paper masks of my face(including my onetime appearance on Star Trek: Voyager!) But even those teams that didn't participate still got a booby prize during the round...some truly terrifying Candy Corn Red Vines!

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 36667 Drinking and Thinking 63 5 1.000
2 21760 Preciate Cha 62 4 0.800

It was a pretty tight race for the top spots tonight. Drinking and Thinking kept swapping spots with We Drink and Know Things. Vicky's Villains started off strong with a double or nothing, then faltered a bit before roaring back to ultimately take second place. In the end, Drinking and Thinking took first place, with We Drink and Know Things slipping to third. Newcomers Swindogs cheered when they hit a strong double or nothing in the handout round to stay out of the bottom spot.
