About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

It was a nice summer night- though I'm sure everyone there was happy that Walnut Creek hadn't yet gotten into the triple digits that were promised for Wednesday and Thursday!

We had a nice mix of returning teams with some newcomers. I guess we had a lot of superhero fans as the "identify the superhero from the baby costume" picture round saw no less than four teams successfully go double or nothing! From there it was a tooth and nail scrap for the lead, alternating variously between Question Authority, Preciate Cha, Unstable Unicorns, and J-Roc, with VC Victory staying just one point shy of first.

But as they say in Highlander, "There can be only one!" And that one was settled with a tiebreaker, with Question Authority bringing home the gold.

For the drinking round, I reminded everyone of the very sad news that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had broken up, but said there was a silver lining: that meant they were both single! So I asked for everyone to give their best pickup lines to try to seduce Miley and/or Liam. There were a lot of fun lines, but these were the winners:

  • Hey Liam, what's your sweater made of? Cuz I think it looks like boyfriend material to me.
  • I may not be Thor, but do you want my lightning rod?
  • Hey Liam, either you're happy to see me or you're thinking about your brother again.
  • Is your daddy a thief? Because he must have stole all the stars out of the sky...and didn't put them in your singing career. I guess he put them in your eyes...

And here's the final one, whose author was blushing furiously when she came up to get her prize:

  • Liam, I may not come in like a wrecking ball, but I'll wreck your balls tonight.

I'm sure everyone was happy this week for a very non-windy, temperate evening of trivia! Aside from regulars Unstable Unicorns, this week saw several smaller teams of 2-3. But proving size doesn't matter, newcomers The Quizzie Rascals pulled off a first place victory, sneaking past UU for the win.

For the drinking round, we played "Misremembered History," where everyone had to take an historical event of their choice and describe it wrong. Here were the top choices, who each won a $5 gift card to Hops & Scotch:

  • The Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal: When Monica & Bill went on a foreign trip and got lost in the jungle, and had to survive for 7 years. They procreated 9 children in the jungle together.
  • The death of Caesar by his comrade, Brutus: Brutus had wanted the salad named after him.
  • A momentous event happened 50 years ago last month: Lance Armstrong was the first man on the moon. He not only was the first man to step on the moon, but also the first man to ride a bike on the moon. The residue of the "moon cheese" that we all know exists caused his ex-girlfriend Sheryl Crow to accuse him of farting, inspiring her Grammy-Winning hit, "The First Cut Is the Deepest," referring to Lance Armstrong "cutting the cheese."
  • That time Miss O'Leary's cow crashed the Exxon Valdez.
  • The period of history when Ray Bans were worn by the majority of the population was commonly known as The Dark Ages.

It was another incredibly windy night at Hops & Scotch! And Murphy's Law was full in effect, as the microphone also died around the second round of trivia. Thankfully, your humble quizmaster is not exactly the quiet sort, and was able to make himself heard(barely) over the wind and street traffic.

Hazy Maybez came out swinging tonight, and never let up, carrying the lead in every single round. The competition for second was tight too, as Cappin It and Wonder Twins duked it out. Going into the final round, it was looking like Cappin It was going to take it, but their lack of knowledge of domestic cheeses tripped them up, and Wonder Twins squeaked past them.

For the drinking round, everyone was asked to come up with an "elevator pitch" for their idea of what movie would eventually unseat Avengers Endgame from the all-time worldwide box office champion. Here are the winners:

  • Dove Alley Documentary. Up close, unleashed, unreal! You won't believe your eyes!
  • Titanic 2. There was room for two(and they are back!)
  • Space Force. Donald Trump builds a wall around Earth. "Fighting aliens from taking your job!"
  • Porn.
  • In a world...where people drink beer and know random facts. In a world...where a terrible breeze whips across the land. In a world...where blatant pandering gets you points in the drinking round...Paul Benson is...THE QUIZMASTER. Based on a true (embellished) story.
