About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

Things were shaking tonight, and not just because of that earthquake! Cliston's Pistons was off to a shaky start, missing a double or nothing in the first round to not even make it onto the board. For quite awhile, it was looking like a race between Degens and Positively Negative...though Positively Negative put a target on their backs with a round 2  double or nothing. Cliston's Pistons soon righted themselves, and it was a bold double or nothing in round 6 that put them in a dead heat with Positively Negative. Their knowledge of languages turned out to be just the slightest bit better, as they finished in the lead just one point over Positively Negative.

It's the first day of summer, and while the air was a little chilly, things were hot hot hot on the trivia front! Cliston's Pistons and Infinity Squared threw down with a round 2 double or nothing, and round 3 saw S.W.A.G.S and Best Friends respond in kind. Infinity Squared also hit a second double or nothing in round 3, having everyone wonder whether it would be a runaway victory on thier part. Round 5 turned into the pivotal round, with Cliston's Pistons, Best Friends, and Positively Negative each scoring 20 each for that round, while Infinity Squared and Preciate Cha gambled and lost. Round 7 stumped Cliston's Pistons, but they had enough of a lead that they just barely held onto their lead over Best Friends to take the night.

It was a gorgeous evening in Walnut Creek, and things got off to a strong start with both Positively Negative and newcomers The Guantanomo Babes hitting a double or nothing in round 2 to fire up the competition. And fire it up they did! Infinity Squared came right back with their own double or nothing in round 3. Both Cliston's Pistons and Preciate Cha were trailing a bit behind the pack, but both teams demonstrated their movie car knowledge in the handout round with big double or nothings, and suddenly it was anyone's game. In the end, Preciate Cha took the night, with Cliston's Pistons just edging out Infinity Squared for second place.

With Covid restrictions getting lifted tomorrow here in California, I thought during the drinking round, I'd see everyone's knowledge of pandemic movies. It's obviously a popular genre, as all the questions were answered correctly, even with a stumper like The Girl With All the Gifts.
