About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

Unofficial Hops & Scotch team L'il Cuties set the pace early in round 2, tossing down the first double or nothing of the night to take a commanding lead. Meat Palace stumbled a bit in the third round, but soon bounced back in the Guess Who round thanks to a combination of a good guess and other teams guessing wrong. It was starting to look like Meat Palace had a lock on the win, but then Question Authority nailed a double or nothing in round 6. Meat Palace ended up in second place, with Question Authority in first. Technically L'il Cuties took the night with 58 points, but as the bar team they're ineligible to win.

For the drinking round, I challenged everyone to tell me a joke, with the bar staff judging the top five. Here are the winners:

  • Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7, 8, 9.
  • Why don't they celebrate Halloween in India? They already have enough Gandhi.
  • What does one saggy boob say to another? If we don't get some support they'll think we're nuts.
  • Why didn't 4 ask out 5? Because he was 2 squared.
  • What is a pirate's favorite letter? 'Tis the C that they love.

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 21410 Question Authority 49 4 1.000
2 23453 The Meat Palace 45 3 0.750
3 21760 Preciate Cha 32 2 0.500
4 Legal Drug Dealers 23 1 0.250

This Thanksgiving week, it was a chilly evening so we moved indoors to heat things up. Things were off to a slow start with perennials Question Authority, as there was only one team member representing at the start of the night. Thankfully for them, a few teammates arrived after a couple of rounds, and things started turning around. It quickly became a close contest between Question Authority, Ryan Gosling from the Movie Drive, The Pandas and Meat Palace. In the end, Question Authority just edged past The Pandas to take first.

It being Thanksgiving this week, for the drinking round I had everyone embrace their inner pre-schooler and trace their hands to draw turkeys. There were a lot of good entries, but as always, not everyone can win one of the prizes. In the photos section you can see the winning entries, all chosen by the bar staff at Hops & Scotch. (It should be noted that the #1 favorite of the staff was "turkey with boobs," as they called it.)

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 21410 Question Authority 30 6 1.000
2 The Pandas 29 5 0.833
3 23992 Ryan Gosling from the movie Driver 27 4 0.667
4 23453 The Meat Palace 25 3 0.500
5 Sorry No Peanuts 22 2 0.333
6 L'il Cuties 19 1 0.167
7 Whiskeys 18 0 0.000

Early on, it was looking to be a contest between Tipsy Teachers and either VC Victory or Question Authority, with Texas Hillbillies lagging well behind in the first couple of turns. But while most teams stumbled a bit with Round 3's fun new "Before and After" round, the Hillbillies stunned everyone with nailing it, doing a double or nothing and jumping into the lead! They were unshakeable from that point on, despite stumbling a bit in the last couple of rounds. It was a bit of a nailbiter towards the end, but the Texas Hillbillies just squeaked past Tipsy Teachers for first place, and VC Victory had a close-behind third place finish. Normally dominant Question Authority was still recovering from their vacation, but have vowed a comeback (though they did rake it in during the drinking round.)

Speaking of the drinking round, everyone was tasked to come up with a new Thanksgiving mascot to "jazz up" the Thanksgiving holiday. Apparently a lot of people misheard "jazz" for something spelled similarly, as most of the entries were NSFW. Keeping that in mind, if you want to see the winning entries, they're at the end of this week's photos.

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 Texas Hillbillies 37 3 1.000

3 21933 VC Victory 34 1 0.333
