About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

Today was National Rum Day! For the drinking round, I asked some rum-based trivia, but it was a good thing that I had extra questions as everyone's knowledge of that drink of the Carribbean was pretty shallow.

For the main event, we had a frayed wire on the PA system so let's just say it was a good thing that I've had stage training, as I was forced to compete with the sounds of traffic on Treat boulevard.  Fire Hydrant Repair Team was off to an early lead, nailing double or nothings in the first two rounds. They were looking to be the early favorites, but then Cliston's Pistons hit their third double or nothing in round 5, jumping into the lead. However, Paul's Bunions was close behind, and they demonstrated their ship knowledge with their third double or nothing in round 6, clinching their victory for the night.

Tonight saw an especially exciting competition, as there was a lot of teams jockeying for first and second place. Cliston's Pistons, Positively Negative, Preciate Cha, and Well that's a stupid name all jumped out strongly into a tie for 1st in the first round with a double or nothing. Cliston's and Positively Negative kept the pressure on with yet another double or nothing in round 2, though Infinity Squared added their own in that round. Cliston's slid a bit midgame thanks to an incorrect guess in the Guess Who round, with Preciate Cha pulling ahead in round 5 with a big money 20 point double or nothing. Trailing heading in to round 7, Cliston's Pistons confidently doubled down in that final round, finishing in first. Solidly performing throughout, Positively Negative ended up in second place close behind.

Nothing like a car crash in the middle of round 4 to shake up the night! That's exactly what happened as we heard a screech, then a thump, and then watched a geyser of water erupting from the middle of Treat boulevard. But after a brief pause to call 911 and calm down from the excitement, everyone returned to laser focus.

The Guantanamo Babes started out strong straight out of the gate. For awhile, it looked like they were going to be the clear winners of the night. Infinity Squared seemed for the longest time like they were going to stay in the middle of the pack, but then two back to back double or nothings in rounds 5 and 6 propelled them into first, and The Guantanamo Babes had to settle for the silver.
