About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

In our Veteran's Day edition of trivia, Preciate Cha was out the gate with an early lead, but a stumble in round 2 tied them with Del Cielo's Revenge, with The Therapists just behind. But round 3 saw The Therapists edging ahead of the two other teams, where they remained through the final round. Del Cielo's Revenge stayed in a dead heat with Preciate Cha until they just missed a double or nothing in round 6, allowing Preciate Cha to take second.

For the drinking round we went with a paper airplane challenge, where each team had a minute to make a paper airplane, which they then launched to see who could make theirs go the furthest. Preciate Cha threw first, setting the bar with some impressive distance. Del Cielo's Revenge fell short of that distance, and The Therapists managed to accidentally take themselves out of the running when their paper airplane somehow looped around to fly backwards.

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 The Therapists 50 2 1.000
2 21760 Preciate Cha 44 1 0.500
3 Del Cielo's Revenge 36 0 0.000

As the only returning team tonight, Preciate Cha established dominance quickly, kicking things off with a double or nothing in round 1. They cemented their lead with a second double or nothing in round 3. Meanwhile, The Evil Russians and Stop the bus and let my friend jack off traded blows for second place, but The Evil Russians proved they knew their swords with a double or nothing in the handout round, pulling ahead of Stop the bus and ultimately taking second.

Seeing as the NorCal fires put a damper on Halloween last week, for the drinking round I asked everyone, "what's the best trick you've pulled on Halloween (or one that you've wanted to try)?" Here are the winners:

  • I dressed up as a scarecrow and scared kids as they walked up to grab candy from the bowl. Any kid that took more than one was targeted. (true story)
  • Give out Oral health care products as treats.
  • I dressed in drag as a slutty nun and went trick-or-treating at a convent. (true story)
  • I turned off the lights and told my girlfriend that I wanted to put my finger in her belly button. She screamed, "that's not my belly button!" and I said, "well, that's not my finger." (true story)
  • Dressed up as a cow, laid on cow-print blanket, then popped my head up to startle guests. (true story)

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 21760 Preciate Cha 61 3 1.000
2 23556 The Evil Russians 48 2 0.667
3 23549 Stop the bus and let my friend Jack off 36 1 0.333
4 Denver or Bust 23 0 0.000

California may be on fire, but no place was hotter than King Trivia tonight. Question Authority came out swinging with a round 1 double or nothing, but newcomers Flerkin and The Meat Palace weren't going to let that go unanswered. By round 5, both were in spitting distance of Question Authority. But it was Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy that made a surprise come from behind move, stealing second place.

For the drinking round, we were originally going to do a costume contest as it's Halloween week. However, the power outages and smoky air scared away many of our regular teams, so we only had one costumed quizzer, who of course took home a prize. But we had a Survey Slam for the drinking round instead, and ended up in a tie between 3-Sum and Question Authority. But cementing their dominance for the evening, Question Authority scored victory in that round, too. A couple of the new teams won't be taking
QA's victory lying down, I'm sure...
