About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

Hey there Quizzers! It was a great night out at Hops & Scotch. The weather was beautiful and the crowd was energetic. 6 teams showed up to thrown down tonight.

Round 1 eased us into the quiz with a nice selection of questions. The drinking round was very animated as I made people raise their hands to announce an answer. By the end of Round 7 Infinity Squared inched ahead and took home 1st prize. Positively Negative took home a close 2nd and the newcomers Sushiteers came in 3rd.

Thank you all again for the chance to run a show for you. I hope I did Paul justice. We'll see you again next week. Same Quiz Time. Same Quiz Channel.

There was some tight competition tonight between our current top three teams, Quizzie McGuire, Positively Negative, and Jewish Laser Tag. In the end, Quizzie McGuire tenaciously held on to their slim lead, coming in first with Jewish Laser Tag close behind.

We had a couple of returning teams from Ye Olde pre-pandemic days: Question Authority and Better Late Than Pregnant both put in strong showings.

As today was 4/26, aka "Alien Day," I decided to do an Alien-themed drinking round. It's a good thing I had a lot of extra questions in my pocket for this one though as it turned out that despite the large crowd, most were not very familiar with Alien, Aliens or any of the other films in the franchise!

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 Quizzie McGuire 42 8 1.000
2 Jewish Laser Tag 39 7 0.875
3 Positively Negative 37 6 0.750
4 Question Authority 33 5 0.625
5 Better Late Than Pregnant 30 4 0.500
6 Table 2 26 3 0.375
7 KayKay 17 2 0.250
8 Bad Hombres 15 1 0.125

Positively Negative came to play tonight, throwing down the gauntlet with a double or nothing in round 2. No other team got within spitting distance of them the whole night, so then it really became a question of who would come in second. Infinity Squared held on strongly to that slot, though Paddy's Boys was creeping up on them. Sadly, the double or nothing equivalent of the half court shot by Paddy's Boys in round 7 was all net, and the game finished predictably.

For the drinking round, I challenged people to name the television show based on the fictional game played in that show. There was some impressive TV knowledge on show as there was only one game that no one could name.

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 Positively Negative 49 4 1.000
2 Infinity Squared 39 3 0.750
3 Paddy's Boys 29 2 0.500
4 Tanner Stage Six 21 0 0.125
4 The Sweet Angels 21 0 0.125
