About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

At Hops & Scotch we have over 450 types of whisk(e)ys ranging from American Bourbon to Japanese Whisk(e)y.  Whether you like your rye neat or your Scotch with a drop of mineral water, or your bourbon with our ice spheres molded at the bar, Hops & Scotch is sure to have something to please your palate!

A beautiful night at Hops & Scotch! The patio was packed, and the claws were out as regulars Infinity Squared, Positively Negative and Quizzie McGuire were all jockeying for the lead. But while they were all focused on beating each other, newcomers Cliston's Pistons and Team Cody were sneaking up from behind. It was looking for awhile like the Pistons might take the game, but Team Cody proved their literary prowess during the handout round and leapt into the lead with a double or nothing.

For the drinking round, I thought it might be fun to do a little Disney Parks trivia. One of the Better Late Than Pregnant team got really excited, then bummed that she blew her one win for the round on an easy question. There were some pretty challenging ones in there too, but the crowd still showed they were strong with the Mouse.

It was a cold, windy night, but everyone stayed toasty by the portable heaters and were ready to rock some trivia!

Things started off as they have lately, with Infinity Squared, Positively Negative, and Quizzie McGuire all jockeying for the lead. But tonight both Bad Hombres(thanks to their impressive Ethan Hawke knowledge) and Christened4Life were serious contenders. It was a photo finish with Quizzie McGuire just getting their noses past the finish line first.

For the drinking round, I challenged everyone with some riddles worthy of the sphinx. It turned out that several members of Infinity Squared were inordinately good at riddles, so this was the first and likely last night of a riddle round.

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 26170 Quizzie McGuire 42 6 0.750

After a few technical hiccups, we got the ball rolling with the game on this warm spring night in Walnut Creek.

Quizzie McGuire jumped out of the gate strong as usual, with Positively Negative and Infinity Squared not far behind. The Lins knew their L'il Wayne, and so in the Guess Who round they moved into third. After the dust all settled, we had a tie for first between Positively Negative and Infinity Squared, with Quizzie McGuire dropping into third. Ultimately, Infinity Squared guessed best during the tiebreaker, and took the night.

In honor of Mother's Day yesterday and Mexican Mother's Day today, I had a Mother's Day-themed drinking round where I gave everyone clues to guess famous pop culture mothers. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun during that round, and the gift cards were spread around well amongst the various teams.

Game Rank Team # Team Name Score Teams Beaten Team Beat Average
1 Positively Negative 32 5 0.917
1 Infinity Squared 32 5 0.917
3 Quizzie McGuire 28 4 0.667
4 The Lins 22 3 0.500
5 Bad Hombres 21 1 0.250
5 Idahomies 21 1 0.250
7 Some Thompsons 18 0 0.000
