About Hops & Scotch

Whisk(e)y originates from Gaelic for “water of life”. According to author David Broom, the Scots and Irish Gaelic translation of this is uisge beatha. This referred to a proto-whisk(e)y redistilled with spices and herbs and the straight version became known as 'usky'."

Now is it Whiskey or Whisky? In short, the spelling "whiskey" is common in the United States and Ireland. The rest of the world, including Japan, Scotland and Canada, uses "whisky."

Bourbon, Rye, Single Malts, Blends - they're all whisk(e)y. There is no one right way to drink all whisk(e)ys. Whether you drink it neat or on the rocks, whisk(e)y is one of America's most beloved spirits.  Enjoying this beverage is a personal journey that could easily change from week to week, day to day, drink to drink.

You'll find that many whisk(e)ys are greatly enhanced by ice, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least try the whiskey neat. Have you tried your Scotch with a few drops of mineral water?  A splash of water can be a great thing as it releases the hydrophobic elements in the glass, allowing you to detect more aromatics on the nose, and by lowering the alcohol content, it can allow you to taste more flavors on your palate.

Hot on the heels of Daylight Savings Time, it was a dark night at Hops and Scotch, lit up by some bright minds from our teams! Gonzos and Quizzie McGuire made some big moves in round 4, but everyone was unprepared for Infinity Squared nailing a double or nothing in round 5, taking the lead and eventually winning the game.

In honor of Day of the Dead, in the drinking round I had people guessing movies based on famous deaths from them.

It was a spooky Halloween-themed night of trivia at Hops & Scotch...made even more so by all of the blackouts around the Bay Area thanks to the crazy high winds! But power was on at Hops and Scotch, and people were ready to play. Returning team Infinity Squared held onto a narrow lead early on. They managed to extend it during the Guess Who round by playing it cautious, when all the other teams guessed early and wrong, and took home the win. But Bad Hombres, which had been trailing badly through round 4, made a surprise double or nothing in round 5, and ultimately took 2nd place.

I did another Halloween-themed drinking round where you had to guess the monster movie based on various quotes from the films. I had a few real tough ones in there, and was particularly impressed when one person from Wine-O-Mite guessed Tremors right on the first clue!

It was nice to see some returning faces from last week. Both Quizzie McGuire and Infinity Squared were back, and ready to rumble alongside four other new teams.

Quizzie McGuire brought the pain early, nailing a double or nothing in the picture round to propel them into the lead. They never let up, holding onto first place from round one until the end. But newcomer duo Side Salad managed to snag second place, thanks to a solid performance throughout the evening.
