We had an excellent night of Trivia that included espionage, time travel, The Beatles, and Nicholas Cage. And much like Nicholas Cage movies going boom or bust on his hits, some teams played with fire on the double or nothing early and paid the price.
For our beer round this week, we had all team submit a champion for the category of "Music." We had the champions line up in reverse order of the standings, to give the last place team at the time first dibs. Then we went down the line and played, "The Eliminator."
The question - Name a Beatles song. If you couldn't, you gave an incorrect title, or you repeated a song, you were out.
The battle was fierce and we heard some names of lesser known songs, such as one of my personal faves - Rocky Raccoon. But at the end of the day it was 3 Degrees of Separation as the last champion standing and getting that amazing beer from our host, Longship Brewery.
Final standings for the evening:
Third: Cyber Chemists
Second: Chuck's the Best
First: Indifferent Penguins
Luckily for Trivia goers at Longship Brewery, the San Diego heat wave has temporarily come to a close, which allowed the brain power to flow. It also allowed all of the great ales to flow, with Dan, Ryan, and Chuck helping out all of the contestants with keeping their glasses full.
There was an excellent mix of veteran and new teams, which kept the game pretty tight through all seven rounds.
For our drink round this week, the quiz masters were waxing nostalgic about how much we miss Game of Thrones even though its only been gone for a week. We also are lamenting the amount of time it will be until the next season begins. So to try and keep the show alive in our minds, we asked our teams to use the team name they submitted as their house name, to draw us their house sigil, as well as come up with their house motto.
Our winners for the Beer Round were The Farkins with their motto: If you aren't cheating, you're not trying.
(Please see this week's photo montage for some of our favorite entries, as there were many clever ones.)
Places:
3rd: Pickle Rick!! (Going back to their original name after trying a different one last week.)
2nd: The Cyber Chemists
1st: The Indifferent Penguins
And sadly, Longship Brewery says good bye to local fan favorites, Shake N' Bake, as they are moving out of San Diego. We wish them the best of luck, but they will be missed, and we appreciate all the games they played. This does mean that we have an new opening for "Local Fan Favorites," so please send us your applications.

It was a hot day at Longship Brewery. Teams were not only sizzling due to the excessive heat warning issued for San Diego county, but they were also sizzling in the hot seat of trivia. There were many lead changes tonight, and many questions that really challenged our players. Most teams were surprised to learn that there was a movie about a psychic tire, titled: Rubber.
We wanted to do something a little special for our drink round this week. It's fantasy football draft season, and we thought it would be neat to do something related to that. But we were having a tricky time coming up with a question that was fair, because so much of fantasy football is up to chance on a game by game basis. But, we were hit by inspiration -
What if we had a draft, of drafts? We are at a brewery after all...so what if we asked each team to draft us a beer? It needed to be creative, and contain at least 3 flavorful ingredients, a name, and a food item that it would pair with. We asked house bartender, Ryan, to decide the winner. Some notable entries were:
Shake N Bake's Entry:
The "Hangover Cure Stout" - A stout brewed with hazelnut, chocolate, and peanut butter, best paired with pancakes and bacon.
The Substantial Rabbit's Entry:
"Don't Go Bacon My Heart" - A stout brewed with maple syrup, bacon, and bourbon, paired best with a breakfast burrito.
The Fighting Illini's Brew:
"Steve Martin's: The Jerk" - An IPA made with BBQ sauce, pineapple, and habenero, matched best with pig on a stick, lots of sauce, and corn bread.
But our winners were BBQ Buddha Nature:
"Suds of Sidhartha" - A brew made of hops, starfruit, and coriander matched with Thai red curry chicken with rice noodles.
They really all sounded amazing.
Third Place: Farkins
Second Place: Indifferent Penguins
Winners: Chuck's the Best
