We had a lot of new teams come out to Longship Brewery tonight to give King Trivia a try. We even had a team who normally plays in LA, stop by on a work trip. It was exciting to see new faces, have a lot of fun, and drink some excellent beer.
Some of the regulars were on hand to show the newbies how it's done. Chuck's the Best, Indifferent Penguins, and Shake N' Bake got things off to a strong start, forcing their fellow competitors to be bold with their answers. Several teams dared to use the Double or Nothing early and often. Some to glory, some to ruin.
There were two distinct battles - for top honors and third place. The third place battle saw Shake N' Bake firmly in control until round four, when The More We Drink, The Less We Know Things named the celebrity on the six point answer. This allowed Tyrion Lannister's name sake to claim the third place spot and keep hold throughout the rest of the match.
Indifferent Penguins for the second week in a row tied their top competitor, Chuck's The Best, at the end of round seven, forcing yet another tie breaker. This time, Chuck's squad got the closest to the target number without going over, and claimed not only the win, but the special prize this week: A Longship Brewery Drinking Horn.
We also had a special aviation class this week for the drink round. This week we learned that not all trivia is simple recollection of facts, but also the application of knowledge. Each team was provided with a half piece of paper, and tasked with making the most aerodynamic paper airplane possible. The teams then presented their most capable pilot to send their aircraft into the atmosphere, with the plane going for the longest trip, winning the free beer. Rookie sensations, Popcorn Shrimp landed their vessel safely, and then proceeded to consume the complimentary brew.
Congratz to one and all, and we hope to see even more new faces at Longship Brewery next Tuesday at 6PM.
It was an usually cloudy day in San Diego. The dark grey overcast seemed to be an ominous sign of the epic battle that was to take place at Longship Brewery for Tuesday, July 25th.
3 Degrees of Separation was back in action after what they claimed to be a vacation. Rumor has it that they were on a secret trip to the vast libraries of trivia knowledge, located in Suriname, for enlightenment and good fortune in their games to come. Would it pay off?
The game started off close, with three time champs, Indifferent Penguins holding the lead until round 4, when they named the wrong blonde female singer, born in Texas, who married a hockey player. This gave 3 Degrees the opportunity to take the lead, and that they did. The Penguins clawed their way back to even the score for the last two rounds.
For the first time since King Trivia came to Longship Brewery, we had a tie at the end of regulation. The question asked for a specific number. 3 Degrees of Separation almost hit the number on the head to take the very close victory and impressive win.
Other notables - Fan Favorites - Shake N' Bake, won the "drink round" for a second week in a row. New comers, Drinking Illini, joined the game in round four due to the traffic, and still put up exceptional numbers. They may be able to give some of the regular teams a run for their money if they return for a full seven rounds.
Tonight showed that it could always be anyone's game. Will it be yours next week? We hope to see you there!

There are a few times each year, in the quiet little town of San Diego, where there is an electricity in the air. This was one of those nights. On the eve of trivia lovers Mecca, Comic Con, five teams came to battle.
The game was pretty tight through the first two rounds. But in round three, The Indifferent Penguins, back after taking a week off to explore the Arctic, scored a perfect 6 out of 6, vaulting forward with an eight point lead, and they never looked back. They ended the night with 52 total points and the prize.
It was the battle for second and third place that keep the excitement alive. Shake N' Bake, Lone Wolfpack, and Eight Equals D kept the scores within three points of one another going into round six. It was here that Lone Wolfpack would try a Double or Nothing to catch up to the Penguins, and miss it by a single answer. Shake N' Bake capitalized and slingshotted themselves into second. Eight Equals D limped into third place, and that's how the night ended.
The Indifferent Penguins are now three for three in appearances at Longship Brewery. When asked how they felt about their success, they replied, "Meh." Indifferent, indeed.
Think you can be the team that hands the Penguins their first loss? Come out every Tuesday from 6-8 and show us what you got!
