As usual, a large, energized and enthusiastic crowd turned out once again at Golden Road Brewery in Glendale this week, to embark upon a journey through the realm of sometimes obscure, often unexpected and always stimulating trivia.
What an exciting night, with close scores by a bevy of top teams trough the early rounds. Frequent top-three finishers The Bad Explainers and Gingko 1997 set an early pace, but successful doubles in the 5th and 6th rounds took DJ Roomba to the front of the pack. But could they hold their lead in the final lap?
NO! They could NOT!!
Bad Explainers snatched the victory with a strong double in the 7th, while DJ Roomba opted for the safe path in the final round, scoring 10 points without going for the double that would have brought them the victory! Ouch! That's gotta hurt!
The Gingko Gang rounded out our top three finishers, but we'd be remiss not to tip our hat to Sugar Bear Sweethearts, who came for the food, became intrigued by the quiz, asked to join the fun in Round 4 and still scored an impressive 30 points, playing only half the game!
Way ta go, Sugar Bears! We start at 8pm next week! Let's see how ya do when you take the whole quiz!! See ya then.
Your faithful quizmaster would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the fine folks who comprise Golden Monkey Nuts, one of the 22 teams that did battle in our delightful weekly quiz soiree at Golden Road Brewery last night.
It seems that I may have offended the tender sensibilities of the Monkey Nut crew early in the proceedings when I innocently offered my opinion that Thin Mints (though undeniably delicious) are NOT the best and most delicious of the cookies offered annually by the Girl Scouts of America.
That honor, of course, goes to Samoas.
When the Monkey Nuts crew submitted their answer sheet in the next round, they demonstrated the NUTS portion of their team name by including a not-so-subtle note offering their declaration of fealty to the Thin Mint and questioning the judgment of this stalwart quizmaster! WELL!!
You can understand where this stalwart quizmaster felt he had no choice but tp remind the Monkey Nuts (and everyone else) that the quizmaster is the final arbiter of all disputes (as the rules clearly state) and that when the quizmaster declares that Thin Mints (while certainly delicious) don't hold a candle to Samoas, that statement is - by definition - unarguably true and correct!!
Now that should have ended it, right? But Noooooooooo!!
The Monkey Nuts, clearly delusional from having eaten perhaps a few too many Thin Mints, added notes to each of their ensuing answer sheets, professing escalating support for their beloved (if somewhat flawed, though undeniably delicious) cookie-of-choice, and expressing increasingly offensive contempt for your beloved quizmaster, in a sequence that reached its catharsis with the eloquent and elegant message, "SUCK IT TIM!" WELL!!
SO again, I offer my apology to Golden Monkey Nuts for having shaken their core beliefs and rocked 'em with a little slice of Samoan reality. While I do respect your opinion on this matter, I note that you finished in 13th place last night, so clearly, you don't know jack about cookies!! *grin*
See y'all next week.
A truly competitive, go-for-the-glory, double down crash-and-burn session of trivia last night at Golden Road Brewery in Glendale. The lead changed hands after every round and we saw more successful double down attempts (and failures) in one night than we've ever seen before!
In the end, it came down to a neck-and-neck finish between two of our toughest competitors - Sesame Streetwalkers and Gingko 1997, with the streetwalkers winning it by a nose in the tie breaker.
As the scoreboard clearly illustrates, half of last night's teams finished with 50 points of more! A great performance by everyone, on a perfect night out on the patio at Golden Road. Ah, those hot summer nights!!
See ya next week.
