This quizmaster was a bit skeptical, I must admit, when Mike Pence None The Richer assistant manager Matt (with two "t"s) boldly declared that, "Tonight we begin our campaign to win the next King Trivia Tournament of Champions!"
This statement of single-minded purpose came just before the start of this week's quiz at Golden Road Brewery in Glendale, and was driven, it seemed, by the perfect weather, the unique environment of Golden Road's side yard patio, and the recently announced final scores and winners from this year's TOC.
Ah, the brash exuberance of youth! I thought to myself, chalking it up to possibly misguided confidence and potentially alcohol-infused certitude. But then I noticed team captain and chief executive Amy solemnly nodding her head in agreement, and I suspected that they had come "loaded for bear," as the old saying goes. (That's Matt - two "t"s - and Amy pictured there in photo #1)
"But what about David?" I asked, referring to MPNTR's absent towel boy and locker room attendant. "Don't you think you're gonna need David?"
"Double-Down David!?" Matt (two "t"s) huffed with surprise. "Nah! I mean, we like him and all, but he always wants to double down, and he's burned us a few times with unsuccessful doubles he talked us into. Besides, he's home sick tonight, so we're gonna do it ourselves!"
And Amy just stood there quietly, with that icy don't-mess-with-me look on her face, nodding her head in agreement.
And then they won! They WON! With a three-point margin!
Get well soon, David!

We made a few new friends this week at Golden Road Brewery, with a first-time team winning big with an impressive 63-point, first-place performance! Congratulations, Single Stitch! (photo #2) Well done!
The team that finished in the #2 position - Mike Pence None The Richer (photo #1) - found themselves with a very "King Trivia" dilemma at the end of the quiz. After leading all scoring throughout the night, they opted not to double on their Round 7 answer sheet.
"No double this time?" the quizmaster inquired.
"Well, I wanted to," team VP Matt said with regret. "But (team leader) Amy is unsure about one answer and decided not to," he explained.
She needn't have been concerned, as all ten answers were correct. But the decision to not double cost 'em 10 points and opened the door for the Single Stitchers to squeak by for the win. No word yet from Amy about how the view is from under the bus. (Nice throw, Matt!)
Third place finisher Happy Brad Day (photos 6 & 7) also had a good night, with new team member Nicole using the occasion to celebrate her birthday on the side yard patio with a third place win! Well done, Brad team members!
That's Nicole on the right in photo #7. Happy birthday, Nicole! You ROCK!!
See ya next week.
