We kicked off the New Year at the Lion & Crown in Allen with
another awesome King Trivia Pub Quiz last night. Five teams
competed. Two were newbies who registered. Exciting stuff for
exciting times.
Welcome to the Double A's, who didn't win, but placed so well
that the entire pub loved them. Newcomers Swan Stain took
second place honors. A smart and good looking family they were.
I never got around to asking them what a Swan Stain was. Maybe
it's like Goose Pate? Anyone? Bar Guy team hoisted that banner
yet once again last night under the able leadership of Sean,
who took them to victory while Pickles on a Plate, still enjoying
a seat at winner's table for a fifth time in a row, took third.
Merry bad guesses were in abundance. Video game character
Bayonetta was misidentified as Lou's Evil because, well...
Quiz Master Lou has a dark heart sometimes! Guesses as to
Hiccup's dragon in How to Train Your Dragon got Buff, the Magic
Dragon. It also got Lou's flaccid. I think that one came from
the same team who thought Lou was Evil. Go figure. All in all,
another great quiz from our Quiz overlords at KT Corp HQ. All
praise the King!
G-d willing, there'll be another one these things next week.
Stay tuned! QM Lou signing off...
Well boys and girls, here's the last Recap of the year as our
faithful trivia teams in Texas travel to their tickled taverns
to try think out tough tests! (Whew!)
Four teams competed at the Lion & Crown in Allen last night.
Pickles on a Plate made their usual (and most welcome) showing.
Likewise, Ship It! held down their undermanned little fort with
typical aplomb. Last week's placer playing under the nom de
plume Little Men in a Boat became this week's sensation after
rebranding themselves as Tiny Tims. And welcome to newcomers
I Don't Care.
Another awesome quiz from our writers out in the People's
Kommunity of Kalifornia. Here's a few titters from our DoM
(Department of Mirth) as errant answers produced a few chuckles.
Misidentification held sway. Captain Holt on Brooklyn Nine
Nine is not played by Elon Musk was the starter, but the most
wrong guesses came from trying to ID American Olympic Gold
Medalists. Megan Rapinoe got pegged as Megyn Kelly. Hmmm.
Soccer player and news caster. Maybe they're both hooligans?
Kristi Yamaguchi got Kim Jong Un. Now I'm sure that one was a
purely desperate guess using pop news confusion as a map. Finally,
the only thing funny about Brian Boitano is when you don't know
how to spell his name. One last item, on our Theme Round, ABBA
was the reference point and the question asked the name of the
European music competition they won in 1974. Fairly obscure
enough to get the stabs-in-the-dark, Europe's Got Talent and
Octoberfest!
As we say goodbye to 2020, the custom of looking back and taking
a stroll down memory lane for some perennial nostalgia is quickly
overcome by substituting death march on Ministry of Truth Avenue.
So, let's forget that and look ahead instead. As we emerge into
2021, I'm sure there will be a difference of reactions ranging
from Miranda's observation, "O brave new world That has such people
in't!" to Neo's red pill awakening to Winston Smith's self realized
love of Big Brother to George Washington's surprising the Hessians.
Stay well, friends.

"Lights! Camera! Action!" goes the old cliche about getting
business going on a film or TV set and that adage would seem to
fit this week's King Trivia Pub Quiz as the lights came back on,
(at least the one on stage that was dark last week) the camera
took pictures (the one in my phone) and the action got going
with five teams competing at the Lion & Crown.
Pickles on a Plate returned (and why shouldn't they with a third
consecutive first place win this week?!?). Our old friends the
Rockerfellers came back this week. Nice to see familiar faces
(or least half of them). A big howdy to newbie teams Gorgak's
Revenge (obscure Futurama reference much appreciated-"Good news
everyone!"), Little Men in a Boat and Something About Mary!
Pickles pummeled first place yet again this week. Little Men
piloted their craft to a solid second position while Gorgak
oozed into third.
Hollywood seemed to be a component of every single round this
week. There was Leonardo DiCaprio question in the General
Round. Ronnie Regan was in the Picture Round. A Frasier reference
was in R3. The Guess Who was Mr. Rogers. A Humphrey Bogart
film was in R5. Hedy Lamarr was an answer in R6. R7 was an all
movie round. Yep. Makes one wonder at how intertwined our
culture is with Hollywood. Or at least, Hollywood nostalgia.
That's it for this week. Holidays are coming! Be of cheer!
See you next week!
