The Lion & Crown was hopping last night as seven teams converged
on Ye Olde Public House to compete at that particular pastime
known as King Trivia Pub Quiz. The place was absolutely alive
with hope, anticipation and enthusiasm for the official "opening"
of Texas next week, that is eagerly awaited! It is in that spirit
that Quiz Master Lou believes he saw an elevation in participation
numbers and the appearance of some old faces he hadn't seen in
awhile.
To that end, welcome back Mike & Shantal, Jason and especially
Tito! Tito, whose smiling face and music selections embolden
the sinews, sharpen the mind and warm the heart. And a huge
hospitality to the incredible duo team, the Bumble Bees, who
not only returned like prodigals, but buzzed into a first place
win with an eighteen point lead! Team Captain Awesome appears
to have joined the ranks of the regulars by returning not only
to the pub but to the winner's circle as well. After a fierce
tie with Ship It! for a couple of rounds, they broke out of the
pack and gave Pickles on a Plate a run for their number two
position money and succeeded in attaining second place! A side
note: The quiz picked up two late arrivals after Round One had
already started but they wanted to play anyway. Nice to see
Jarvis again and an old friend's team banner got rejuvenated,
Stealth Texas! As King Arthur once said as the fog rolled in,
"We'll fight them using the old ways!"
Our quiz writing overlords came up with a few conundrums which
not only perplexed the mind but stimulated the class clown muse.
Unable to identify Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt character from the
Mission Impossible film franchise, one card put down Scientology
sucks. But by far, the challenge that got the most "creative"
wrong guesses was trying to name the seven sequels of The Fast
and the Furious franchise. From our local wags...
Faster and Furiouser
Fast and Furious: School Zone
Fast and Furious: Speed Bump
Fast and Furious: Skidmarks
Fast and Furious: Vroom Vroom
Fast and Furious: Out of Gas
Fat and Furious
All righty, kids. That's all I got. Got to rest up for next week
as I anticipate things will get quizzier and quizziest! Drive safe!
After two consecutive weeks of withering, winter weather, it
was wonderfully welcome to return to the warm embrace of the
snug Lion & Crown!
A birthday party styling themselves Jamie's Babes was the most
enthusiastic of our newbie teams to tackle the quiz this week.
Despite tying for last place (Hey, no losers!), they enjoyed
themselves immensely. Another newbie team with the deplorably
good taste to name themselves Tiger's Good Leg, even without
benefit of a two point bonus, managed to snag first place honors
with a strategic Double-or-Nothing! And of course it was good
to see regulars Ship It!, Pickles on a Plate, who came in second,
and one-man-army Velvet Hammered, who took away third place.
Chuck Norris popped up a couple of times in last night's quiz.
Once, referenced in a question about his TV series re-boot; And
the second time as Bruce Lee's opponent in... Wait for it.
Which film? Only those intimate with Lee's (or for that matter,
Norris') filmography would know.
Other than that, there isn't much else to report. Stay safe.
Be good. Seek knowledge. Love. Peace. See ya next week!

Ye olde Lion & Crown was rockin' last night with a crowd so raucous
that, in the immortal words of Major T.J. "King" Kong, it "harelipped
ever'body on Bearcreek!". This was mostly attributable to newbie
team Oh Sh*t!, whose rowdy members let out a rebel yell that red
lined the decibel meter every time they got an answer right.
Come to think of it, after about round three (you can apply that to
drinks as well as trivia sets) one fellow was war whooping even if they
got the answer wrong!
Some returning teams decided to register this time out. Bumbling
Idiots, Jarvis and first place winner There Will Be Blood & Honey (clever, that...)
all showed off their shiny new numbers. Pythagoras would have
been proud. Or not. In any case, they all got their accompanying
two point bonus.
Drama poked its nose into the tent when Oh Sh*t! and Ship It!
tied for second place, which prompted a tie breaker. An interesting
situation if ever there was one, particularly as both teams shared
so many of the same letters in their names. Weird, huh? Is that
like, numerology, only with letters? Letterology? Quiz Master Lou
thinks something cosmic was happening, but as usual, clueless as
to what.
Round Two's picture round, utilizing emojis to identify Disney flicks
was most creative and engendered no less than four, successful
Double-or-Nothing's! Round Six's literary challenge of matching novels
to their last line was awe inspiring. (This was actually the round
that propelled There Will Be Blood & Honey into first place. QM Lou
later learned that one of its teammates had a Master's in English Lit.
Talk about being in the wheelhouse!) Congrats to our quiz writers!
That's all I got. See you next week!
