Twas four nights before Christmas and all through the pub,
The shoppers were all drinking and shoveling their grub.
Their purchases all stowed ‘neath their tables with care,
Waiting for Quizmaster Lou to get there.
After a day of last chance Christmas shopping,
What better time for King Trivia Pub hopping?
I just settled down to the deep fried sampler platter,
When up there on stage there arose such a clatter!
I flipped open my quiz book as if in a dream,
While tapping my iphone to register my team!
Peering over my pint glass, looking up from my page,
A man with a microphone had taken the stage!
Hawaiian shirted, clipboard toting, knowing what to do,
I knew in a moment, it was Quizmaster Lou!
Mumbling, fumbling, his papers fell on the floor,
Testing sound levels and a little bit more...
"We've got lots of trivia, statistics and lore,
If you've seen the newsletter you'll get a high score!"
And then in a twinkling, he began to ask questions,
There was sports, pop culture and even picture sessions!
Through appetizers and booze, we slogged through the night,
The competition was fierce, it was a jolly good fight!
Someone whispered, "Double or Nothing, sixth Round!"
And the retort "So's everyone else! Level playing ground..."
At last came the end and the scores were all read,
The prizes awarded and players ready for bed.
Quizmaster Lou packed up his gear nice and tight,
Dashed out the door and cried, "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL, A GOOD NIGHT!"
WELCOME! To new teams, Colors that end in Urple (winners), Memo Y Bandito and Haywurz!
WELCOME BACK! To absentee players Royal Flush (2nd Place) and Rogue One!
AND A “Hail fellow, well met!” To weekly standards Ninja Turtles, Ship It!, Beer Logic (3rd Place) and Stealth Texas.
Ahhh… Lady Luck and the Spectre of Defeat move around so they say.
Who will begrudge us, who will judge us, by the games we choose to play?
Here at my usual watering hole, snug in the booth with my drink,
Some wizard of conjuring trivia games has challenged me to think!
The publican helps with a token or three, to spice up the desire to win,
But tonight’s questions elude my group, my demographic’s a bit too thin…
I’ve got my millennial cousin right here, along with my wizened Uncle John,
But Gramps can’t remember a thing, and Brett’s no good sans his iphone!
Seven rounds of questions go by, and we’re always a few points from the bar,
That Double or Nothing that failed? Victory shall always be near, but so far…

Wow! Great gamesmanship at the Lion & Crown this Thursday night as our pub filled up with returning regulars. Resident teams The Ninja Turtles, IFFY!, Stealth Texas and Beer Logic were joined by our absent usuals Ship It!, Pickles on a Plate, Blood, Bath & Beyond and long time no see duo, The Bastard Barristers; Who, demonstrating their trivia prowess yet again, took Second Place! Joining our happy bands were new comers, The Bookees, who audaciously grabbed Third Place honors. First Place went to Stealth Texas again this week, though the battle for the lead looked like a horse race.
Beer Logic took the lead in round one, only to get tied with the Ninja Turtles in round two. Round three saw Stealth Texas grab the lead and hold on to it until the end. The second and third place battles were like the chariot race from Ben-Hur… All over the track and colliding with each other!
Resident champs, the Ninja Turtles, had two terrible turns of luck, First, the Guess Who Round really threw them for a loop. Virtually all the other teams guessed correctly on the first clue, but the NT’s guessed wrong, putting them almost ten points behind everyone else! It was like that scene in the movie where the military commander asks for a volunteer for a dangerous mission and all the troops except for the one clueless guy, takes a step backward… Ouch! Then, to add insult to injury, on their one chance to win with a Double or Nothing on Round Seven, they got one answer wrong, thus blowing their ranking to last place! Double ouch…
Actually, there was one question in round seven that took the wind out of a lot sails. Quiz Master Lou won’t say what it is, but those who were there will understand. And so, it is with a wink and a nod to all those who failed the same question that I leave you with this song…
When the moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
Age of Aquarius
Aquarius
Aquarius
Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more lies and no derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind's true liberation
Aquarius
