It was a little on the light side last night with only four
regular teams showing up to play. Is everyone else on Vacation?
Either that or people could be ducking and covering in anticipation
of an EMP attack? Maybe the hotel rates go down afterwards?
After the holidyas, I mean. Well, come to think of it...
The Rockerfellers (no relation, fortunately) pulled a Secretariat
and pulled way out in front with two, back-to-back Double or
Nothings in Rounds one and two, cementing their lead and a first
place win by nearly twenty points! Ah, victory. Tastes like...
Flatbread pizza! And maybe those cute little corn dog bites!
Those are two of the tastiest treats at the Lion & Crown and this
quiz master saw a lot of them being served last night!
The FNG's duked it out with Pickles on a Plate for a tense and
dramatic battle for second place. Both teams went back and forth
round after round but the FNG's shouldered them out with a
narrow two point lead. This is the second, consecutive win
for the FNG's in as many weeks, moving up from third place to
second. At this rate, who knows? Alas, Deadly Alliance could
have been the second place winner had they not Doubled down
on the Round Five Find the Connection round. Had they earned
nine points instead of zero, they would have walked away with
two prize cards. Oh well. C'est la vie!
Some interesting question sets from our quiz writers. The Picture
Round called for identifying famous Chris', or celebrities whose
first names are Chris. Revelations: Chris Tucker doesn't look
like himself anymore. Most folks remember Christopher Lee either
as Hammer Films' Dracula, Bond villain Scaramanga or LOTR's
Saruman, but one team remembered him as Christopher Plumber!
Actually, one wonders how ole Chris Lee would've fared as Capt.
Von Trapp... Or how about Julie Andrews as Mina Harker?!?
Another fun gaff was how all teams misidentifed the tallest,
Hawaiian volcano as a macadamia nut! Oh well. Product branding
recognition versus potential earth disaster. That might anger
some gods, ya know?
Another glorius summer weekend is upon us. Let us pray it is not
the last! Remember kiddoes, stay hydrated, get your nose out of
your smart phone while driving and fer goshsake... Don't click
on those stupid, phishing name generators! Quiz Master Lou,
signing off!
It's the July 4th Independence Day Weekend and to kick it off,
last night's King Trivia Pub Quiz at Ye Olde Lion & Crown Pub
got things going on a high note despite the humidity, the
rain and the thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening!
You know that thing where it's all nice and air conditioned
inside the bar, but then you walk outside and your glasses
fog up because it's so muggy? Well that was Quiz Master Lou
last night. I got mugged by the mugginess. No, really. I
was walking back to my truck after the show and my glasses
went opaque white! I had to stop because I couldn't see where
the heck I was going! And when you're loaded down with forty
pounds of PA and QM kit, you don't have a free hand to wipe
your lenses! So I just stood there. Waiting for my glasses
to acclimatize. One. Two. Three. Man, this is taking a long
time. "Mommy, what's wrong with that man?" I hear from behind
me. "Come along darling. Quickly now!" The sound of alarmed,
scampering footsteps scurrying away doppler in my ears. Sweat
begins beading on my forehead. Twelve. Thirteen. Fourteen.
C'mon! This is taking forever! A mosquito lands on my nose!
A careful, practiced pursing of my lips combined with a jutting
lower jaw and sharp exhalation send a blast alcohol laden breath
at the pest, warning it off my proboscis. Eighteen. Nineteen.
Twenty. Finally, the fog starts to peel back. Ahh. I'm able
to move forward again! As I load up my gear, I recall the
inside advertising covers of comic books I have read in my
youth. Along with sea monkeys, X-Ray Specs and pepper gum,
I seem to recall windshield winders for glasses. Or am I just
inventing a false memory? But, I digress...
Congratulations to the FNG's, who finally made it into the
winner's circle this week by placing third with a well placed
Double-or-Nothing (and despite two DoN misses! Oops...). The
Rockerfellers won second while Bar Guy won first. A big L&C
welcome to newbies Apex, who enjoyed themselves but whose picture I snapped was too out of focus to publish.
QM Lou's favorite question set this week was the Round Six Hand
Out which required matching 10 atheletes to movies they appeared
in. I was intrigued by the absence of O.J. Simpson, then it
occurred to me that his infamy may have tinted his selection.
On the other hand, that could be another category in the KTPQ
future quizzes. Celebrity Felons anyone?
Have a great 4th of July, don't blow your hand off and watch
out for false flags! QM Lou, signing off!

If you read this column each week, then you know the deal...
New comers 2 Docs and an Engineer and the self styled DT's
(who sat at the bar, appropriately) joined our ranks of regs
this Thursday. And amongst the regular teams, we hearald the
return of two of KTPQ's stalwarts, Shredder Squad and, migrating
all the way over from Killarmey's (still on hiatus), Counter
Culture, who showed up, pack-like, occupying the entire fire
place pit in our own L&C pub. Ten teams in all!
It was a real race to the finish, too! The scores were almost
completely tied from out of the gate with a four way tie for
first place in Round One. As the game progressed, the ties
broke off into pairs and eventually, Pickles on a Plate broke
out of the pack in Round Three and dominated all the way to
Round Six. Alas, the Round Seven challenge (name 10 of the 11
FBS schools that played in the College Football Playoff since
it began in 2014) toppled them to third place as the sports
geeks on teams Rockerfellers and Counter Culture strategically
Doubled-or-Nothing'd and leapt into First and Second places
respectively!
Aaaaand, another great quiz from our quiz writing overlords
out west with a special tip o' the hat to the Round Five Find
the Connection Round - Ten seemingly unrelated questions whose
answers have a mystical commonality when we ask our tenth question,
What Do All the Previous Nine Answers have in Common? With
answers like Tiger Woods, Mojave Desert, Jaguar Motors, Yosemite
Sam, Puma Shoes and Chester Cheetah, (and a few non feline answers
as well...) is it any wonder one wag put down "Big cats with
big litter boxes?" But the answer was they all include names
of MacOS Versions! You should have heard the "Awwwwwww" that
went up from the house! It was sublime. Only one team got
the connection. Well done quizzers!
Until next week, Quiz Master Lou bids you, adieu!
