Exciting stuff from the Lion & Crown in Allen last night! In most quizzes, usually one
team (or a few) takes the lead and tries to stay out in front while the others play catch up.
This was not the case in Thursday night's King Trivia Pub Quiz. Long-time-no-see-'em team
the Bumble Bees kept pace with the pack for most of the night staying just on the outskirts
of the winner's circle. Whether by design or a quirk of fate, this position made them a dark
horse when it came to Round Seven where they pulled the most strategic Double-or-Nothing
this quiz master has seen in a long time! Bzzzzzzt! "Sting!" Bumble Bees take first place
out of seemingly nowhere with a 53 point win. Cue Rimsky-Korsakov, please.
Rookie team Binge Thinking, with a little help from that I-Pooped-My-Pants guy, (sheesh, I
really wish he'd change that name!) took second place with 51 points while another absentee
team we haven't seen in a while, Shredder Squad, got third place honors with 49.
Our Round Three Theme round's third question prompted Quiz Master Lou to do the scene
from Twelve O'clock High, wherein Gregory Peck, as newly appointed commander of the 918th
Bomber Group, the tough as nails General Savage, lays down the law to the underperforming
bomber wing which has become known as a "hard luck" outfit. I paraphrase, but here goes...
"I don't have any sympathy for this 'What are we fighting for?' jazz. We're in a shooting
war. We've all got to fight and some of us have got to die. Stop making plans. Forget
about going home. Consider yourselves already dead. The sooner you can get your mind around that fact, the easier
it will be to do your job. But if you think you have some kind of special hide that has
to be saved you won't make it in this outfit. Any man that disagrees with me can put
his resignation on my desk!"
Have a great weekend everybody!
Old and new friends showed up to contribute to the wackiness that is King Trivia Pub Quiz
last night at the Lion & Crown in Allen. Four, count 'em, four newbie teams jumped in the
pool with the regulars. A shout out to the Dim Bulbs, whom we have not seen in some time.
Welcome to the enthusiastic and opinionated Binge Thinking (nice name, that..) who voiced
loudly (and spoke for most of the rest of the pub) their disapproval for the Round Seven
content. It's not that the L&C crowd has anything against Ariana Grande and Beyonce, it's
just that the momentum was moving forward at light speed then smacked right into a cultural
wall. (Kudos to Walker Texas Rangers, who actually got the most right answers on that round,
though. Surprising and unexpected.
I.P.M.P. has been gaining clout on the local scene, now firmly established with their
team number (good for the nightly two point bonus), but must now take extra ribbing as
their name allows Quiz Master Lou's improv muscles to flex. As I do not indulge in base
scatology, I Picked My Part, I Pumped My Papa, I Parted My Pumpkin and all the rest are
coming to the fore. Great stuff!
Resident champs, the Ninja Turtles are back in form, taking first place honors, while
Stealth Texas snuck second and Walker Texas Rangers justified a sound third place arrest.
Always like to see my pals, IFFY!, the Rockafellers, the Smart Asses and the Hooligans.
(Sounds like a place where the high falutin' rub elbows with the profane, doesn't it?)
And finally, another well deserved kudo (kudos can be singular, right?) to our quiz writing
team, who keep us guessing with their "Nuke the Whales" logic approach to the question
sets, which always prove to be inventive, topical and surprising. That's all the news that
fits. Have a great weekend everybody!
It was a gathering of ten tribes last night at the Lion & Crown in Allen, as an amalgam
of newbies, intermediates and seasoned vets vied for prizes in that thing we know and love
called King Trivia Pub Quiz!
Newbie team Jab joined the registered ranks and had the bittersweet taste of having played
well and losing even better. Street Smarts and IPMP (who finally signed up) continue to
improve. Look for them to get into the winner's circle in coming weeks. Staunch and
stout regulars Beer Logic, Walker Texas Rangers, Pickles on a Plate and IFFY! provided
their usual tough competition and grandeur of spirit. The big three last night ended up
being Stealth Texas, taking first prize, while resident champs Ninja Turtles (whose NT
baby is now their official photo mascot!) grabbed second. Third place went to the power
alliance of Ship It!/Blood, Bath & Beyond.
Some groovy questions last night as well. Quiz Master Lou actually got a chuckle asking
why the Sonoran Desert is so sleepy... Because it's the "Snorin' desert!" Well. You had
to be there. Watching the competition was like watching a foot race where the ranks of
runners round a bend and smack suddenly into a brick wall that wasn't there before. That
was Round Five! Arcade games are that generational connection between today's PC gamers
and the old foggeys who used to put quarters into machines back in the 80's. (Remember
Lunar Lander?) Some enterprising entrepreneur should find a balancing act that joins those
two generations together.
Just sayin'! Have a great weekend everybody!
