It was a warm night for December at the Lion & Crown in Allen last night. No
fire in the fire pit, but there was a flame of frivolity in the air as several
teams of regulars and a couple of newbies descended upon the pub to try and
triumph at our trivia tryst!
Welcome to the Mother Runners, who enthusiastically embraced the King (of
Trivia) as their new liege of leisure, hopefully due to the machinations of
Quiz Master Lou. Also, a big welcome to Cry Havoc, who appreciate a good
Shakespeare quote. Welcome back to Jarvis as well. Haven't seen them in a
while and they should register their team name. (Two point bonus!)
The Divas returned as well. This time, they brought some men along. I think
they may have been man-divas(?). I think the male gender term is divo. They
were not men. They were divo! (A little eighties humor, there...) Whatever
they brought to the game however, worked well. They grabbed the lead mid game
and held onto it until the penultimate round when Deadly Alliance, formerly
known as Blood, Bath & Beyond ("Hey, change your name on the website, guys!"),
took over with a stunning Double-or-Nothing for a climatic win. Stealth Texas
snuck in a good third place showing while Street Smarts found themselves out on
the street, unfortunately.
Celebrity worship reared its ugly head in the Round Two Picture round as those
in the know were able to identify Hollywood stars by their smiles. Those who
blissfully didn't care earned style points by tagging Tom Cruise as Desmond
Tutu and Will Smith as Madame Curie.
Have a great weekend everybody!

Lots 'o teams and lots 'o people. That was the scene at last night's KTPQ at the
Lion & Crown in Allen where eight regulars and four newbies came together for the
weekly trivia contest we know and love. Quiz Master Lou has to hand it to the
newbie teams who came in to challenge. It takes a stalwart trivia buff with the
right attitude to break into the ranks. Team Wild Cat had fun but let us know
up front they had to bail early. (School night, right?) The Griswold's went on
vacation directly while Pomp & Circus Pants (who registered and had one the best
team names) decided the questions weren't quite in their wheelhouse. But an
honorable mention goes to the Flaming Chinchillas who stuck it out to the end
and placed well for a first timer. Congratulations! You should have a drink
named after you. ("I'll have a flaming chinchilla, please!")
A couple of bad DoN's set Pickles on a Plate back, dashing their hopes from
Tuesday's victory at Killarney's. Deadly Alliance (aka Ship It!/Blood, Bath &
Beyond) suffered the same fate as did the Hilltoppers. Rockerfellas and Beer
Logic looked like contenders for a while, but it was Street Smarts, Stealth
Texas and the Bar Guys who came through in the end.
Our Round #2 Picture Round of identifying the Jason's gave rise to the evening's
best guesses of desperation. While this old fogey quiz master was impressed at
how many people knew what Derulo, Priestly and Segel looked like, (and let's
admit, that was not Biggs' standard look), I better liked the creative impulse
to refuse to leave a blank line on a quiz page. I give you...
Bourne
Stallone
Von Jason (funnier if you say Jason Von Jason. Cause, you know... Repetition.)

Next Thursday is Thanksgiving and the L&C won't be hosting a pub quiz, so I'll
next see you in December. Happy Holidays!
Good grief, Charlie Brown! It's King Trivia Pub Quiz night at the Lion & Crown!
And so, through a series of amusing mishaps, a dysfunctional group of trivia
nerds pulls it together to compete at their local pub for prizes. Their captain
is a self doubting neurotic who lacks confidence and always manages to lead them
to high hopes of victory, but is dashed to defeat in the last round because the
crucial answer was his responsibility and he chokes.
Among the team members are the sadistic narcissist, someone who excels at exploiting
weaknesses in others and taking a perverse delight in doing so, obviously as a
compensation for their own lack of fulfillment in life in obtaining their desires.
There's also the social misfit, a sports buff and encyclopedia, whose specialty
makes them invaluable as a team member but whose constant social faux pas' tend
to turn their own friends away. And then there's the insecure sage, full of
knowledge and lore, who administers pearls of wisdom at every turn and who manages
to find the "true" meaning of life upon reflection of the teams' loss.
All of this is accented by a snazzy piano jazz score provided by Vince Guaraldi.
And then Quiz Master Lou snapped out of it and realized someone was chiding him
about two names on the Round Six list that would be correct answers for one of
the questions. Ahhh... Thanks Giving is coming.
Ninja Turtles won. Street Smarts seconded. Beer Logic 3rded. (?) Have a nice
weekend everybody!
