The Lion & Crown in Allen last night was... Loud. Quiz Master Lou has now added a new
rule to the list of King Trivia Do's and Don'ts. Never try to ask a question over a
Dallas Cowboys game in a crowded bar. Especially during a crucial play.
One other thing I noticed. Folks usually run either hot or cold on Keanu Reeves flix.
Point Break got identified as SPF-18 and Surf & Turf. Or even the more improbable
Broke Back Mountain. Constantine got The Devil's Advocate and Devil Boy. (At least one
was actually a movie...) As for Round Three, Artemis and Captain Cold were roundly
mistaken for Athena and Mr. Freeze. Good tactical quiz questions, there!
Top winners were the resident champs, Ninja Turtles, with the Smart Asses grabbing
second and Stealth Texas taking third. IFFY! landed just outside the winner's circle
in fourth, showing well. Four new teams sprang up to meet the challenge as well, making
last night's KTPQ packed, stacked and jacked! (I don't know what that means but it
sounds like good copy...) In the mortal words of Les Nesman, may the good news be yours!
Keyword: Excitement! Thursday's King Trivia Pub Quiz at the Lion & Crown in Allen last
night was all that. In the knowledge of trivia, Lady Luck's cousin is Sister Smart. And
like her cousin, she has a habit of moving around the room. This was evidenced by the
constantly shifting lead, as it passed from team to team. Newbies Live Buzzed or Die took
the top rank in round two, but lost it to Pickles on a Plate in round four. Round five
saw the Smart Asses move into first but they were knocked out in round six by Stealth
Texas, who in turn got overtaken by the Blood, Bath & Beyond/Ship It! Alliance in the
final round. Exciting enough for you?
As per usual, the questions were pretty good, too. Quiz Master Lou kept 'em guessing in
the General Knowledge with some creative swapping. Those who didn't know the Thursday FB
question made a pretty good alternate guess as to the name of the Austin Powers themed
club that opened in Glendale. Unable to recall the Electric Pussycat, Gold Members Only
was an informed theory.
The real bug bear was the Picture Round, matching famous people to their statues. It was
Freddie Mercury's sculpture that perplexed most folks: And, as customary, led to some
interesting if not downright amusing guesses. David Bowie, John Travolta and Jerry Lee
Lewis were all plausible, but it was team Walker Texas Ranger's reckoning that it was
Teddy Roosevelt that blew our minds! Quiz Master Lou's pressure cooker brain went into
sudden overdrive at that thought, hearing in his mind's ear, an unusual version of
Bohemian Rhapsody...
Is this San Juan Hill?
Is this reality?
Caught in a broadside,
No escape from artillery.
Jump on your horse,
Gallup to the top and seeeeeee...
I'm just a colonel, I'm not a resident,
Because I'm easy come, easy go, little high, little low,
Anyway the wind blows I'll still be president...
With apologies to Queen.

The tribes turned out in force last night at the Lion & Crown in Allen, despite the
intermittent rain. All veteran teams, including the Alcoballics from Kilarney's
turf. (What they missed on Tuesday, they came to grab on Thursday!) One newbie team
tossed their hat in the ring and dubbed themselves Doctor Feltersnatch, but bowed out
gracefully after getting run into the rail on the third lap.
A pretty good quiz was had, and tough, too. And inventive. The wedding cake toppers
idea was pretty clever and kept 'em guessing. Likewise, the Find-the-Connection Round,
with it's whale motif. Kinda reminded me of the old 70's icon, "Keep 'em guessing with
your 'Nuke the Whales' bumper sticker. Ah, yes... In those days, the independents had
their own advocacy groups.
Style Points for Wrong Answers Awards: Cake Topper #5 was not Madonna and Guy Ritchie.
Aretha Franklin is not Dolly Parton, but a good early guess. And when Quiz Master Lou
asked "What island territory is mostly comprised of Inuits and Danish?", he had to make
the distinction that we were talking about the people, not the pastry.
Kudos to first place winners the Ninja Turtles, who returned in strength, claimed their
stake on the fire place pit and regained (at least temporarily) their resident champ
status. Pickles on a Plate snacked on second while IFFY! stole third a second time in
one week!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
