Even though a deluge of rain threatened, the turnout was still pretty good at the Lion & Crown pub in Allen, TX last night. It was also a night of firsts as three teams simultaneously and successfully Doubled-or-Nothing in Round One and tied for first place!
It was a horse race as Shredder Squad, Pickles on a Plate and The Misfits crowded out the rest for the One, Two and Three spots respectively until Ninja Turtles ambushed themselves into third place in Round Five with their own double or nothing win, reminding everyone why they are the 27th ranked team nationally… Nevertheless, Shredder Squad prevailed for the evening by virtue of having the sole Disney maniac on their team!
New teams: The Brewsual Suspects (great name, BTW!) managed to stay relevant while Too Drunk to Remember bailed early having forgotten they were playing.
Men of Troy was actually only a Man of Troy, playing solo for most of the evening until Priam and Hector showed up to lend a helping hand around midgame. (I think Odysseus dropped them off on his way home…) Showing the recklessness of an Achilles, their overuse of Double-or-Nothing betting razed their chances to the ground. Too bad they didn’t have a Cassandra to help them out. It probably wouldn’t have worked anyway. (sigh)
Kudos to Blood, Bath & Beyond, Ship It! and Beer Logic whose usual, competitive gamesmanship kept everyone on their toes and the tone honorable.
As for me, Quizmaster Lou roundly tortured everyone with his Irish accent during the Theme Round, sounding like a cross between Barry Fitzgerald and Mrs. Doyle. Cultural Appropriation? You betcha’!
Until next week me bucko’s….
NEW TEAMS: The Hilltoppers and #literally (that’s “hashtag” literally)…
OLD FACES WE HAVEN’T SEEN IN A WHILE: The Bookees, Bumblebees and Pickles on a Plate.
THE USUAL SUSPECTS: Ninja Turtles, IFFY!, Misfits, Ship It!, Beer Logic, and Stealth Texas.
WRONG GUESSES WORTH A MENTION: Beardy McLady, Boobzilla, Dr. Arnold Saltzenegger…
QUESTIONS THAT WERE NOT ASKED BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN: David Carradine portrayed the half-Chinese, Kwai Chang Caine in what iconic TV series in the early 1970’s?
TASTELESS OBSERVATIONS: Mirai Nagasu accomplished what Tonya Harding did without any kneecap injuries. Uh, to anyone else…
THE WINNERS: Pickles on a Plate brought their birthday posse with them and rounded up the first place prize. Ninja Turtles conversely, severely undermanned, surprised with a second place win and IFFY! made a glorious and well deserved third place victory.
That's all the KT news that's fit (or otherwise) to print or my name isn't Quizmaster Lou! Go well in life!
Welcome to four new teams who dared challenge the Quizmaster – Blabber Stammer gave it their best shot but couldn’t hang to the end. Hope they come back again and maybe bring some friends to pump up their brain trust. Bar Guys (singular) showed quite a bit of pluck playing solo and managed a respectable low middle ranking. Boaty McBoatface gets special mention for having a quirky name and for their shameless enthusiasm even though they finished 9th! And finally, T&A managed to show their assets in the best light with a 6th place position. A shout out to Men of Troy, whom we haven’t seen since the holidays, but managed to pop in, quaff a pint, grade papers and play some KTPQ! Talk about multi-tasking… Show me a man who eats dinner and reads the paper while taking a bath and I’ll show you a man who doesn’t waste time!
Shredder Squad tore the place up with a rending win, grabbing an early lead with a double or nothing score in Round Three while resident champs the Ninja Turtles took second. Ship It!, delivered a third place win all by himself. The glorious defeat award goes to IFFY!, who doubled down in Round One but missed one question, which, I learned later, was a second guess. Their first answer was the correct one, which they scratched out. Always go with your first instinct, kids!
Quizmaster Lou says have a great week, stay safe and be nice to cats!
