Action at the Lion & Crown in Allen was seen last night when the magnificent
seven rode in to play our Thursday night session of King Trivia Pub Quiz! The
aforementioned M7 were the teams, of course. The Smart Asses dominated the room
with their usual boisterous humor and good cheer, but didn't do so good in the
score department. Alas, alack the day, as ole Wild Bill Shakespeare used to say.
Newbie team Blue Screen of Death started up and ran smoothly, then lost some
PCU's and blipped out a couple of rounds early. Likewise, the lovable yet
vulgar IPMP (I P**ped My Pants), whose moniker Quiz Master Lou changes each
time he announces scores. Variances went from 'I Punctured My Pantaloons' to
'I Plucked My Pudenda'.
Street Smarts got shut out of the winner's circle from a cascade effect when the
other newbie team, The Snowmen, Doubled-or-Nothing'd in the last round and leapt
firmly into a first place win! Congratulations, Snowmen! The deadly alliance of
Ship It!/Blood, Bath & Beyond did the same thing (it was baseball...) and took
second while the brainy Rockerfellers enjoyed a third place spot.
Some pretty tough question sets from our quiz writing overlords in California...
Cinderella's versus Sleeping Beauty's Castle on the picture round tripped up
just about everyone. And a theme round about shoes that doesn't mention Imelda
Marcos is, well... I just don't know. The Guess Where Round was pretty good
and the Find-the-Connection Round was brilliantly executed. Nice work, overlords!
That's the dispatch. Keep your powder dry. Quiz Master Lou signing off!
This week's recap is all about Quiz Master Lou. Well, not really. Just his
short comings at last night's pub quiz at the Lion & Crown in Allen! I guess
every Quiz Master has a bad night from time to time. Mine started before I got
to the pub with this sore arm I've been nursing. I feel like that old Borscht
Belt routine...
MAN: "Doc. It hurts when I go like this."
DOC: "Don't go like that."
Anyway, it pains me to say (see what I did there?) I think I've got that rotator
cuff thing. At least, my neighbor diagnosed me as such because it happened to
him and that's how modern medicine works these days. What do doctors know, right?
Reversal of decisions during a quiz is not necessarily a bad thing, particularly
when you're doing the right thing. And I did the right thing by allowing the
answer "Prepositional" to substitute for "Directional/Positional". But the critical
gaffe came at the end of the game when QM Lou accidentally marked the correct
answer of Sweden as wrong... Twice! I've got nothing against Sweden. Sweden is
a great place as far as I'm concerned. It's a mecca for... For... Well, it's
just sort of mecca right now. (apologies to Will Franken) In any case, thanks
to John of Beer Logic whose enlightened self interest made QM Lou do an audit of
Round Seven ballots and change the scores accordingly (for the second time that
night!) for the real rankings. Corrections made. Scores ameliorated. Players
happy. QM Lou stressed.
Well, that's the news. Oh, by the way... My phone battery plunged from 50% to
1% twice yesterday. Anybody know what's going on with that?
What can I tell you about Thursday night's King Trivia Pub Quiz at the Lion &
Crown in Allen, TX? Lots! That's what!
Item 1: We had four, count 'em, four newbie teams! Welcome to Team Ram Rod,
The Divas, Rubber Duckies and Ummm... Hope to see you back!
Item 2: In the Return of the Prodigal Quiz Team Dept., a big "Where ya been?"
to the Hernandi, IFFY! and the Bastard Barristers! What's happenin', brotha?
Oh, and especially to Stealth Texas and Tito! Hey guys! Hey! Ha ha!
Item 3: Billy from Ship It! recovered from an illness and returned to action
with Blood, Bath & Beyond, capturing third place in the bargain. Nice goin',
dude!
Item 4: Beer Logic. Because... Well, just because!
Item 5: Drama! Oh, the drama. We had enough drama that it required huge doses
of Dramamine! Street Smarts and Bastard Barristers duked it out for a first
place tie. (Street Smarts won the tie breaker...)
Item 6: Unable to resist revealing that Pumpernickel can be translated to the
"devil's f@rt", Quiz Master Lou was amazed to find out how many folks already
knew that fact! Except for one team, who put down Dave's Famous Bread... Note
to self: Avoid Dave's Famous Bread in future.
Item 7: One team's addendum to the Blue Bell ice cream answer in round two was;
aka G-d's gift to Texas!
Item 8: THERE IS NO ITEM EIGHT!
Item 9: Have a great weekend!
* Won Tiebreaker
