Thursday night at the Lion & Crown in Allen proved the King Trivia Pub Quiz to be
tough, fun and educational all at once as eight regular teams met for quizzical
fun and games. Welcome back to Strawberry Hill Forever. This was their second
KTPQ so I guess they liked it. And we also celebrate the return of the prodigal
team, the Bastard Barristers, who showed up with a little help from their kids.
Unfortunately, a badly aimed Double-or-Nothing KO'd their chances of victory
early on. (I worry when lawyers gamble...)
The Ninja Turtles, severely undermanned got outgunned this time while Rockerfeller,
still basking in the glow of their victory from last week, slipped a tad from grace.
(It wasn't exactly a fall.) Sentimental faves Iffy! (whom we also haven't seen in a
while) faired the best of the non winners with a nice comeback in Round Six by
Doubling down on their French. (Huzzah for Duo-Lingo!)
The deadly alliance of Ship It! and Blood, Bath & Beyond (with a little help from
Stealth Texas I think!) ascended to the top of the pyramid with a 54 point victory
while Street Smarts and Beer Logic took second and third respectively.
Anna Pavlova got the most wrong guesses in the Identify the Dancer Picture Round.
Two teams went with Mata Hari (not a bad guess) but Gypsy Rose Lee, Isadora Duncan,
Carmen Miranda and Zelda Key (?!?) also made the list.
Parting Shot:
As seen on the internet - "I hate it when people act all intellectual and talk
about Mozart when they've never even seen one of his paintings!"
Quiz Master Lou ponders about the weather as many of us Texans do. My recollection
of last year's August was much hotter than this year, yet overall I'd say that in
general, the seasons seem to be shifting. Summer feels like it's stretching into
September, maybe even October. Is it starting later as well? Or, is it just getting
warmer all over as some climate alarmists claim? Or, is it because man, in his never
ending mania to cover everything in concrete (which holds in heat, by the way...) and
to congregate in mass numbers, thus generating massive build ups of biological BTU's
(we're all human batteries, ala Matrix, right?) which is driving the thermometer up?
That being said, there wasn't a single weather question on last night's King Trivia
Pub Quiz, but there was a kick a$$ "Scientist" match up on the Round Six Hand Out
set! In fact, another awesome question set from our quiz overlords in Karloffornia
(apologies to the late, great Forrest Ackerman for that one!). Our finest was a
most brilliant Find-the-Connection Round. Round five is a KTPQ fan favorite for its
combination of individual answer seeking and discovering the general motif. It can
also be built badly too, if the theme is too far out of reach. Last night's was
just sublime though. It was a concept, plain and simple. Things that can be opened.
From bags to minds. It was tough, yet appropriate. Brilliant!
History was made as one of our oldest teams suddenly found themselves in their very
own wheelhouse. Rockerfeller captured the lead early in Round Three and hung onto it
until the end, winding up with a 63 point first place win! Well done, Rockerfellers!
Ninja Turtles got pushed to second and Street Smarts nailed third. Three newbie
teams played as well, with Velvet Hammer getting a respectable fourth place position
and Strawberry Hill Forever (Let me take you down to) landing in eighth while Retail Impossible bailed early but still had a great moniker!
QM Lou wants everyone to enjoy their Labor Day weekend and to remember this important
message...

Thursday was a day and night of some strange energy. It began with awakening from
a troubled, unremembered dream. At work, callers from a city two thousand miles
away sounded frustrated and confused. A woman is sent home early from her job
because her boss' database got hacked. When she arrives home, the smoke alarms
in her house are blaring for no apparent reason. And a housewife logs onto her
usual online shopping page to discover it is now in Russian! Coincidence? No, my
friends. It is zeitgeist... Look it up if you don't know it, you trivia geeks.
After all, this is... King Trivia Pub Quiz!
Newbie team Blinker Fluid returned for their second match and brought some pals
along. It worked, because they catapulted into first place on the last round
with an incredible Double-or-Nothing, correctly naming exactly the ten most expensive
U.S. cities to live in. Wow! Quiz Master Lou does not have an emoji for that.
Street Smarts got second while Beer Logic and Pickles on a Plate duked it out for
third. The latter won the tie breaker.
Our quiz writers came up with a pretty imaginative and silly Picture Round for R2.
Identify the Fairy! Quiz Master Lou had no idea of the level of magical fairies
in the modern pop culture. The most wrong guesses were attributed to the Tooth
Fairy, conspicuously absent from this list, and Morgan Le Fey. (Morgan Le Fey
was not a fairy BTW, she was Merlin's assistant who got ahead of herself. Just
sayin...) The Absinthe Fairy from Moulin Rouge got the most imaginative wrong
guesses with style points going to Titania, the Jolly Green Fairy, Selena and
Slut Factory. (Hey, when in doubt, toss it out!)
Have a great weekend everyone!
