The pub was sparsely populated last night as King Trivia Pub Quiz rolled out at
the Lion & Crown in Allen last night. It's that weird time at summer's end as
back-to-schoolness overcomes coolness, mostly because the thermometer is still
hitting the high nineties and lower one hundred's. The sun hits your eye and
makes you wish that you'd die, that's August!
Welcome to newbie team, Blinker Fluid, a name I've come to know since there's
been many a time I've been driving behind someone who's car has run out of it!
Ninja Turtles dominated a second week in a row with a sixty-five point win.
They did get challenged though, as the Ship It!/Blood, Bath & Beyond alliance
pulled a clever Double-or-Nothing in Round Seven and bumped right up against
NT's with a sixty-four point score for second place! Beer Logic came in third
at sixty. Stealth Texas and Street Smarts (severely undermanned) brought up the
rear with fifty-nine and fifty-four respectively.
The Fonz was the featured character of that 70's show Happy Days as one wag
observed. New Asgard was widely recognized as modern Dystopia and only one
team knew Mary, Queen of Scots' portrait. (And one of those who didn't was
from Scotland! Och!) Quiz Master Lou punned that Napoleon lost a famous
Belgian Waffle and at album twenty-six, Cher really needs to hang it up,
don't you think? Every team save one successfully Double-or-Nothing'd on the
Round Six Handout round, Don't You Forget About Me, matching 80's song titles
to their artists, a most fun round and progenitor of a mad rush to the juke box!
And as for the dubious title of Yee Haw! for Round Seven... Well, if the cowboy
boot fits I always say.
Have a great weekend!
The fun never stops at the Lion & Crown in Watter's Creek as we embarked on our
regular Thursday night King Trivia Pub Quiz! Last night in particular marked the
triumphant return of the Ninja Turtles, fresh from their wedding staged on the
tropical isle of Barbados. If you'll recall last year, Kyle proposed to Evelyn
right smack dab in the middle of the Round Four Guess Who Round, with a little
help from Quiz Master Lou, of course. Well, they culminated that act with their
Magnum Opus, marriage in the tropics! Congratulations! Welcome home! And oh,
look... You won first place! Again.
The most deleterious alliance of Ship It!/Blood, Bath & Beyond catapulted into
a second place win when they successfully Double-or-Nothing'd in Round Seven,
leap frogging over the Street Smarts, who had to settle for third. And a big
Lion & Crown welcome to the trio of newbies who styled themselves as the One
Armed Bandits. These three lads brought the greatest enthusiasm, if not the
trivial knowledge, to the game. They Doubled not too wisely, but too well.
And to boot, they pulled a stunt on ole QM Lou, substituting the Ninja Turtle's
name on the top of their quiz page (scratched through next to their own) making
this Quiz Master do a double take! I appreciate that. We welcome the return
of the One Armed Bandits.
As for the quiz itself, kudos to our quiz writing overlords, who came up with
some intriguing trivia. The Round Three Theme Round of 'They Call Me Mellow
Yellow' gave Quiz Master Lou a chance to warble a line from the Donovan song
book, and to also mash-up a famous Sidney Poitier line from 'In the Heat of the
Night'. (Check it out. That line became the title of the sequel.) QM Lou's
favorite round was the Round Six Hand-Out Round, The Roaring Twenties. We luvs
us our history stuff. Of course, throwing Star Trek and Terminator dates into
the mix is like adding King Lear to the Shakespeare's Histories List, but what
the heck?
Have a great weekend everybody!
Hopped up Quiz Master Lou accidentally announced he was at the wrong pub last
night when he kicked things off at the Lion & Crown in Allen last night! As
the back injury progresses and medications taper off, let us hope this is the
end of such occurrences. I'd much rather be writing about witticisms which
arose from talking about the Walking Dead instead of the walking wounded!
Team Thirsty Thorsday returned for some Viking action, but instead of Valhalla,
all they got was Loki's leftovers. Newbies Sofa King Awesome thought they were
being original but learned their name had already been used. No biggie. They
just went ahead and used the two point bonus as well! In a heartfelt moment of
spirit, team Bar Guy rallied for a big win. (Rob is still with us, you know.)
Street Smarts scooped up second while the most deadly alliance of Blood, Bath &
Beyond/Ship It! took third.
Another case of quiz writer overlording resulted in some tough rounds. You
could smell the gears burning as brains were pushing the envelope to guess at
things unknown. The Guess Who round opened like a floodgate of bottled water
at about the 4 point clue when teams awkwardly figured out it was Awkwafina.
The inspired Senior Senors round confounded some and elevated others while The
Irreplaceable Mr. Williams was just plain fun! Finally, guessing which countries
bordered the Baltic was a sea breeze for some, but the geography challenged were
conflating it with the Black Sea (like QML)! How about combining the two into
an area known as the Blactic Sea? No? Oh, well...
That's the way it happened. Have a great weekend everybody! And if you can't,
aim for mediocre. You're less likely to be disappointed!
