The action at the Lion & Crown pub was as hot as their delicious, flatbread pizza
was, as eight teams competed in our regular Thursday night brain bash. It was
nice to see the return of team R.O.U.S., aka Rodents of Unusual Size. We chatted
about Cary Elwes' recent interview in which he inferred a remake of the classic
The Princess Bride would be ill advised. And we agreed with him whole heartedly!
Double-or-Nothing's were kept at a minimum by some very interesting and esoteric
questions posed by our quiz writers at KT Central. The Theme Round's square
number motif for example, was made particular by the addition of a query concerning
Adele's discography. In short, if you weren't a fan, you didn't have a plan!
The Guess Who Round was inspired as well. This Quiz Master remembers the height
of Gloria Vanderbilt's popularity when her name brand adorned a roll of paper towels!
However one feels about Christian Bale, the Picture Round's choice of Empire of
the Sun reminded us of how long he's been in movies. (And how long we've been
watching them!) And finally, Round Seven's perception versus fact factor got way
amped up in trying to figure out who 10 of the 12 bands/artists sold the most
albums of all time in the U.S. Those who didn't make it onto that list were more
surprising than some of those who did. Mostly. Kudos to the quiz writers!
The deadly alliance of Ship It!/Blood, Bath & Beyond provided us with this season's
best come-from-behind victory so far. A strategic DoN in Round Five of all places,
shot them to the top of the pyramid, where they stayed until game's end. That
left Street Smarts and Ninja Turtles in a knife fight for second and third place
respectively, which is where they wound up.

Arrrrgh, matey's! Twas International Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day at ye old Lion and
Crown Pub in Allen last eve. Twere innerestin' how it come to be on the same
day as the King Trivia Pub Quiz. And there I was, Ship's Quiz Master, at seven
bells and nary a nautical question on me question set! Why, the closest we came
to anything near sea farin' twere the Match the Coast to its Country Round. And
don't get me started on how some goose livered dutchman got one of the answers
mixed up! Triton blessed, we corrected course in time. Me lips are sealed as
to the particulars, but let's just say that it were an insult to two countries!
We probably averted a war. 'Course, bein' a pirate and all, war's good business!
Am I winkin' or twitchin'? I'll never tell!
Those sons 'o sea witches, the Ninja Turtles, captured the biggest prize ship with
a 59 point win. Street Smarts, scallywags all, heaved ho a second place win
while those bilge rats Blood, Bath & Beyond (plus Ship It!) got third place. With
such a piratical moniker, ye'd think they'd 've fared better...
There's nary more to scribe in the rudders. We had some landlubbers join the crew.
A couple callin' themselves Fantasy Lovers signed on as powder monkeys and a lad
who liked to swing the lead fancied himself Final Borders came on board. It were
a crew on a rust bucket named Infidelity that played us false. Disappeared right
after Round One they did! Because... They were... Infidelity. Sons of sea
biscuits!
This here be Quiz Master Lou, shovin' off. Steer clear o' Jack Ketch, me hearties!
Things were raucous and rollicking at the Lion & Crown in Allen last night as
yet another rowdy Thursday of King Trivia Pub Quiz got rolling. Newbies the
Sister Wives threw their figurative hats into the ring only to discover yet the
existence of another societal pyramid, that of the pub quiz culture!
Ninja Turtles dominated that pyramid early on with two consecutive Double-or-
Nothing's in Rounds One and Two and never relinquishing the lead for the rest
of the evening. The second and third positions became more or less a blitz
krieg between Street Smarts, Scott's Tots and the Rockerfellers rivaling any
jockeying ever witnessed at the Preakness. So much so, that the inevitable
drama of a tie breaker occurred twixt Scott's Tots and Street Smarts, with the
former nailing it for second! Exciting stuff.
Rounds Two and Six received the most accolades while Rounds Three and Five earned
the most enmity. Mostly because the questions in Find-the-Connection were a little
too esoteric as to obscure the motif. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
After all, part of trivia is to impart esoteric knowledge! Oh well. Live and learn.
Or live and ignore. Or ignore and die. Or live and die. Hmmm... How'd I get onto
that? Must be the stream-of-columnist!
